I hadn't drivin or heard a 4age before. OMG sounded sooooooo much deeper and more powerful that my 4af lol. and the car. I took it for a test drive around their block, I started to drift the first corner and then it hit me this wasn't my car lol. It was just the power... so responsive, has a new clutch. Everything was so tight, felt GREAT! Not sure exaclty about this version of the 4age, I think it's the blue top (blue lettering?). Mechanically the car seemed amazing, and important areas like the floor seemed good too. BUt the body other than that.. wow lots of tlc needed lol. BUt but... it's an ae86 :p It will become a project car for me that I will drive whenever so I don't care for rust.
they wanted $3000 but I was like wtf need ALOT of body work and thing like the passenger side mirror cover, hard shit to find around here... said 2500 and the guy was like... well... 2 people have offered me that and I said no but 3 people?... Fine
I was like woo. that new clutch makes it worth it, new rear tires too not that they will last me long lol
they are hard to find! Almost had a 1985 sr5 but the dude sold it when I was suposed to go look at it, wasn't to happy about that. Meh at least this one is a gts. Just driving it around the block I was all pumped up. Didn't think rear wheel would feel that amazing.
from the ae86? no! that rear wheel drive was so much more fun that the front wheel drive! With FR it feels so much better when you floor it The FR layout is one of the reasons I want an 86 :p

Just curious, besides the FR layout, what other reasons did you have for wanting the 86?

TVIS - Keep it or Remove it?
There have been many, arguments on the issue of TVIS on early model 16 valve 4A-GE. The TVIS creates higher velocity intake charge at the engine's lower operating range by closing off one intake runner of the pair on each cylinder. Now, this is a highly effective method of making usable torque curves while retaining higher volume flow at high operating range. In most near normal applications, generally meaning light bolt-on tuning, the TVIS continues to function very well. Thus keeping it is a very good idea. However, heavier modifications including ECU, Carburetion, highly aggressive valve train/cam and internal work all present effects which create difficulty in controlling these items. For example, the triggers for the TVIS will be eliminated for carbureted applications, and it's variable induction, even if it was operational presents more complex challenge to jetting your carburetors. Heavily modified engine which greatly alters maximum rev range and shifts the power band in either direction will present similar challenges to an ECU programmer as well. In those cases it is easier to remove the TVIS and use the capabilities of the ECU tuning or carburetor jets to match your desired torque range. In short, for most basic performance upgrades, the TVIS should be kept and maintained to give nicer overall torque curve which does NOT inhibit power in any significant way.
I also wanted an 86 because of my ae92, overall a great car. I love toyota's because of it. I also drove the ae86 and thought it was AMAZING. Another reason is I have grown to like the look of the car (hatch not the coupe) and those flip lights, like my ae92 :p. I also don't want an INSANE ammount of power, things like the 240's and such have alot of power. I don't need alot of power, my ae92 has 90 hp lol. And the 4age! the sound when they started that engine OMG! lol
I want a rear wheel drive so I can drift alot easier. The front wheel drive isn't as great since I refuse to use the e-brake to make the car slide.
thanks for that TVIS info, that explains why the car felt powerful throughout it's rpm range, where my ae92 is slugish until you hit 3000 rpm
