Question What could this be?

The whole time I have owned my car it has been puzzling me. I know the clutch is almost completely gone (warms up and RPMs skyrocket when you give it some gas) but I have always wondered why:

I cant put it into 1st gear unless I am creeping or stopped.
I go to gear down and there is a "thump" just before the shifter hits say 3rd.
And sometimes I cant put it into reverse! I have to go forward a foot and then try again.

What is the problem and how is it fixed? Bring forth your wisdom! Thanks in advance!!

have you tried adjusting the clutch at all. if you look inder thedash on the drivers side, there is a threaded rod that comes off of the clutch pedal. On this rod is a jam nut that you can loosen and use to adjsut the clutch to some extent. You amy try looking in a manual for more information on this. We I used to ahve to do ita ll the time to my 4x4 truck. As the clutch wears you have to adjsut to compensate for that wear.

The only other thing I can think of is the synchros in the tranny are goin out. If this is the case you are looking at trans rebuild.

You CAN adjust a hydraulic clutch, it's a threaded shaft under the dash.

True if the adjuster under the dash is out it may not be giving the slave enough fluid, the other thing that comes to mind is that in the clutch master there is a return spring, if that return spring is broken the piston may be hanging up in the body causing a fluid shortage at the slave cyl

Sounds like the syncros, that the same that happened to my car when my tranny hit a speedbump. What year is your rolla? I think $1200 is alot just for a tranny

dude.. if its the synchros don't bother spending $1200 when you can easily pick up a used transmission for $100-200. Too bad you're not in Toronto as there's a surplus of C56 transmissions from people doing 20V motor swaps on their RWD cars.

I picked one up for $100 so even if you pay say another $100 to get it shipped to NS and another $200 to get her installed, you're still laughing at your mechanic for quoting you $1200 for synchros.

The reverse problem is normal, its the only sprocket that moves into place.
1-2:nd gear synchros tend to go, but with a toyota short gearbox, you wouldnt need first gear that much, unless for takeoff.
When my synchros go, I'm gonna make my box into a dog gear box, fuck synchros, they're just a luxury
