Brake question?

Well today I was coming home in the fast lane at about 90mph when I look up past the truck in front of my and see a Chevy SUV spin!! About 50 feet in front of me is an early 90's F-150, he locks his and I jump on my brakes with every bit of strength my leg will give me!! the F-150 just barely missed the suv and I stopped before hitting the F-150. At first I was really impressed with the way my car stopped but then I was worried!! From my understanding when a non-ABS braking system is up to par it should be able to lock the wheels up at full braking power. (Even though you really don't want the brakes to lock up in a panic braking situation, bacause it increases stopping distance.) My question is what could keep my brakes from being at 100% I have the GT-s rear disc conversion including brake booster, master cylinder, new rear lines, proportioning valve, pads and rotors that are no more then 3 months old and all new Toyota DOT 3 brake fluid!! The olny thing that hasn't beeen changed is the hard brake lines!! Am I worrying too much or is there a problem in my braking system?

well how hard did you hit it cause i know mine lock up if i push it with all my force but if im just slowing down from like 75 mph it usally slows pretty quickly without pushing it all the way down.

I am pretty sure I had the pedal down as far as it could go.

Sounds like air in the lines to me, who blead your brakes?

Locking the brakes is actually worse, because 1) you lose control 2)a rotating tire slows down better than a locked one.

try reading his post first, and yes you should be able to lock your wheels.

The brakes might just need adjustment and also depends what speed you're going at, you were doing 90MPH at the time.. I doubt your car would have slowed down any faster.

yes you should be able to flat spot your tires on a non abs car if you have everything correct in the braking system.. No you should not lock up your brakes on a non abs braking sustem you should strive for a 90% braking situation since you still can maintain some control over steering. I had to do this every two years for a long time until abs became standard on patrol cars and yes boys I was one of the guys chasing you down in the crown victorias and chevy caprices. We had to practice every other year with brand new cars on a track. I did not mind getting paid overtime for the duty. The track instructor told us that tires averaged about 300 miles a set.

I bled my own brakes with the help of friend @ work twice to make sure all of the air was out!!

It is the speed limit as long as you have you radar detector up and cops have something else better to do!!

Try bleeding the brakes again and make sure all the bolts are tight as not to let air back in or fluid out...Might be worth checking your proportioning valve but if anything somthing front or back sould be locked up under full pedal force unless your a midget..lol no offence guys

I can't lock them up at high speed with my new tires. They used to lock up easy with the stock size tire. But I also can't burn out with these tires anymore either. to grippy and the lack of power.
I was bored one night and I was trying it out. since I need to get a feel of what these tires can do. they increased my stopping power tremendously!

Mate whats your tyer size cant remember what you got as i was following you other post just before..ps go the 20v..lol ..bigger tyers will stop you from burn outs etc due to the grip facter..as your car has...im gessing std front discs this will place a lot more load on your braking system..more than intended..hence you will need more pressure to lock em up!but the bottom line is they sould still lock if only just!!!!also after a few atemps the pads will get hot and fade making it almost impossible to lock em ..so try once at a time with a break in between to let them cool ...hope this helps..got spec on ya front setup
