4AFE Hydraulic Lifters?

Does the 4AFE have hydraulic lifters? If not, mine may require a valve adjustment. What's the procedure for this, and does it require any special tools? What is the recommended gap measurement?

Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving,
Jen

no they are not hydraulic. it can be costly to adjust the valves because you will most likely need to buy shims you also need a special tool

if you let us know the year someone should be able to find the specifications

Its cheaper to have them adjusted normally. However if you have access to tools and shims then its cost effective to do it yourself.

1991

My car is a 1991...
I'm assuming thats a pretty specialized tool that they won't have with the loaners from Pep Boys/Kragen??

Thank you for the picture and the information.. I"ll ask some friends.

Has anyone ever adjusted valves on this model without the special tool?

Why do you think it need adjustment? It could be sludge buildup causing the valves to stick.

Good question

A mechanic told me that they might need adjustment awhile ago, and there's almost a clacking sound when the car is cold (when you first start it up in the morning). I suppose this could also be caused by other stuff as well, but what is the service interval at which you are supposed to adjust valves?... it's probably getting there.

thank you for the advice.

I have bought spare seys from a junkyard to adjust them.First mark all shims w/ a micrometer. After getting measurements from valves and then removing the bad measuring shims measure these also and try to shop through replacement set till you find one that makes up the difference. No guarantee you'll make a complete adjustment. It may take some from the dealer or buy more extras. They are cheap at the junkyard. 15 a piece at the dealer.

the interval is 60k miles. The adjustment takes up the slack that is created by component wear i.e. camshaft, valve tip, lifter wear etc...

The use of Mobil 1 or amsoil will greatly reduce if not eliminate wear of this nature and you won't hear the clickety-clack sound when its cold as often. I have 234k on my camry (94) and the valves have never been touched, the only time the valve cover has been off was for me to paint it and replace the o-ring.

The oil isn't really more expesive if you run it 10k between changes.
