Engine erratic

I have been having problems with my 1988 Toyota Corolla GTS for several months now. I have taken it into the Local Toyota dealership 3 times now but they keep telling me it runs like a top. It doesn't.

Quite often, the engine seems to miss; like it isn't getting fuel for a split second. It will usually do this a few times and then run OK again. A few times the engine has totally stalled while driving at highway speeds. Nothing like driving 100 kph down the highway and your engine just stops. Luckily it seems to come back.

A few days ago, it totally stalled and I had to glide into a parking lot. I started it up again and it ran perfectly for a few seconds, then stopped again.

The RPMs seem to jump around quite a bit, whether driving or at idle, and I get the sensation of lurching.

My engine light sometimes comes on when these problems occur, but goes off again within a few seconds. The mechanics tell me that the engine light has to be on to check the codes, and it appears without the codes, the mechanics cannot troubleshoot anything anymore.

Has anyone experienced something similar that might be able to shed some light on this. The car was awesome and otherwise is in great shape, but it is rapidly becoming dangerous to drive, and I wont be able to sell it for fear it will happen to a new buyer and cause an accident

Thanks

SEARCH dude.. I've posted a solution to this a few times.. What I do is with the car on, adjust the idle to about 2000-2200rpm with the idle screw, leave it there for about a minute or so, then slowly start to adjust the idle down till you get to about 1000rpm or so. if it doesn't work, then I've heard a crack on the intake hose will cause this too.
