strut noise need help please

I replaced my struts and mounts last summer and have had a clunking sound since then. It is worse now that it is cold. Question, if I overtighten the the nut holding the strut assembly what is the worst that can happen? Can I break the shaft, don't thing so? Could the nut snap off? I ask because I have read on the forum others have overtightened the top nut and their clunking noises have gone away. You feed back appreciated.

sometimes the rod nut jams on the threads before the rod is tight in the upper mount. Maybe try tightening them down again see if it stops. also if you didn't replace the upper mounts they could be gone especially the back

I replaced all 4 mounts & struts on my Camry. There was a clunking sound in the rear prior to doing the swap thats why I got new mounts. My point is that I inspected the rear mounts that came out of there and I saw nothing wrong with them. The may 'look' okay I guess and not be okay.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I actually replaced the strut mounts and the struts, just the fromt only. I will try to tighten down, I am just concerned I could break the nut in half if I over tighten and then the spring with decompress and I will have a mess.
