Canada 91 GTS Accelerator Problem

Hi,

I bought a 91 GTS at the beginning of the summer but it is having an issue that I can't seam to sort out.

If I start the car for the first time in a day, after about 2-5 minutes of driving the accelerator will become unresponsive. It is almost as though the engine has gone into idle. After a few seconds (2 - 10) it problem goes away. The engine then runs fine for the rest of the day. This problem only happens sometimes, almost seams random, except that it only happens the first time I drive the car in a given day.

It happened a few times shortly after I got the car and then went away during the summer, but has recently started again. The only connection I ahve been able to make between ocurances is that it seams to happen more it it has been raining.

Any suggestions on where I should concentrate my efforts to fix this would be greatly appreciated - it is rather unnerving sitting in the middle of an intersection with an on coming truck and no accelerator...

Thanks,
Rowan

haha.. I think you have the same problem I had before.. everytime it rained my car would bog down and not accelerate. Turns out one of the bolts on the dizzy cap was lose and there was a small gap between the cap and the motor because of this, moisture would get inside and the motor felt like there was no acceleration. Check your cap and tighten it up mine never came back after I did.

i've seen an 88 corolla gts with 220,000 miles on it.... it had the original cap, rotor & plugs. when we removed the cap, the ignition points were filed flat the the height of the cap! the car still ran fine!

even a bad o2 sensor or stuck open cold start injector won't be rich enough to cause non running issues.

Thanks for the advice.

It happened again last night and I noticed that when I stepped on the gas I could hear what kind of sounded like the engine revving (but a softer sound?), and the tac did not change, even started to fall a bit. Then it kicked in again.

The car sounds good when running, even with the original cap, but after 240K I think its time for a change... I plan do it tomorrow, if i can fined a set (Canadian Tire does not have any in the city).

I did check out the cap last night and it seams like it is on well - it was dark and snowing so I did not spend long.

Get in touch with the folks at www.pdm-racing.com. A set of AE86 NGKs are only $50USD there. I can't see the AE92 ones being too much more. With the Canadian Dollar being fairly strong right now, the price in the end would be about the same as a generic set from crappy tire.
