the car is 5-spd 94' ae102, im starting to get worry here, why is coolant draining so fast on my car?? *sigh* i looked again today and it was completely gone maybe like a little left at the bottom of the reservior, i changed oil couple days ago and it looked fine, not milky or anything, am i using the wrong coolant here?? im using 50/50
Also, no external leaking that i can see, i opened the radiator cap and it was almost empty!!! so i added untill it was full to the top, hope i did it right and didn't over fill it, also, i over-filled the coolant resevior past the full line, hope it'll be fine?? otherwise, my temperature gauge seems to be running good
something to think about though, is that its winter here now and its real cold almost every day i turn on the heater to the windshield, this is not the defroster, is it? I thought the defroster was when you press the button with the heat symbol on it? I didn't press the button for the rear defroster, so the one im using for the front windshield is not the defroster, correct? becuz someone here said using the defroster WILL lower coolant lvls also *sigh* whats going on here.........
Cracked heater core and head gasket problem come into mind.
People have the illusion that you always get the milkshake when the headgasket goes, thats false, doesnt happen necessarily.
Why would the rear defroster cause coolant loss as its electrical not by water.
i dont remember, but somebody here said it MIGHT be the defroster if used everyday like me, and also...i cant believe its my head gasket, i thought corollas were so reliable, the car was maintain very well! *sigh*.....if its the head gasket, how much do you think its gonna cost me to repair it? is it even worth it?
I dunno, I blew two headgaskets within 12 months, because two hoses were misplaced, so the thermostat didnt work correctly. Headgasket blowing has little to do with maintenance, at some point it just dies.
OMMGGGGG, UPDATE: Today morning i pulled my car outta the parking lot and just wanted to make sure it was leaking so I looked at my spot and WOW!!!!!! there was a puddle of coolant right on the snow!!!! OMGG, thanks flashmn for helping, but I can now confirm that it's an EXTERNAL leak!! *sigh* hopefully i can fix this, as $$ is limited to christmas gifts this year *sigh

Just to help cornfirm... the same thing was happening to my car (Ford V8). It was losing fluid but not leaking. I found it would leak from the water pump bearing only after it was warmed up - so as I was driving. Take a good look at your water pump and see if you find signs of leakage.
^ok, couple minutes ago, went and check and couldn't see any leaks, i think it only leaks when its cold, because i was driving the car for 40+ mins and nothing seem leaking, but when i parked the car and the next morning there would be a puddle of coolant, why is it only leaking when its cold?? but....hopefully after a couple hours i'll go back and check where its leaking from, wish me luck
^also, does anyone know if the water pump is the one right under the alternator????

Sometimes mine wouldn't leak for 3 days, then it would leak a week in a row. I drove it for 6 months that way.

More than likely. It's the one with that the belt goes around and the radiator hose connects to. You may need to get a mirror and strong light to see white or green stuff near the bottom of the pump. Now that you know it's an external leak, a mechanic should easily find it.
While your checking your water pump for a sign of an external leak, take off the belt and see if there is any side to side play in the shaft. If it moves much, it could be a sign that your water pump is going bad.
If the problem is only occuring in cold weather, another thing to check would be the heater control valve. I haven't done enough homework to find where mine is, but it should be in line with the two hoses running from the heater core. Turn the heat on in the car and watch the valve for any signs of leakage.
You'll notice which side of the engine the leak is by the general location of the puddle. if its not the overflow shooting out, and its an external leak, have it fixed ASAP or you'll really have to swap the HG.
updated dec. 9th, 2005: allright guys, i can finally confirm this for sure that its an external leak coming near the water pump side and by all the belts, but i am still not sure where its coming from as it ONLY leaks when its REALLY COLD out, why is it doing this im not sure, but when the temp is warm it will not leak. If i cant find the problem and im not sure where the heater core is or the heater control valve, i will bring it in to a shop tomorrow or something, but it would be helpful if you guys guide me the right way and try to fix this myself as i said before $$ is limited, umm...all the belts look fine, no crack or wear, thanks guys...
Probably the seal on the waterpump getting hard when its cold and thus leaking.
any idea how i can fix this??? where should the seal be located at?? i tried looking under the car again couple mins ago and no luck, it only leaks when i park outside the cold winter temps, but this morning i was rushing to work and no time to check under the car when it was leaking, all i saw was coolant dripping from the shield under the car *Sigh
Today morning, went and check outside and there was coolant dripping on the left side, on top of the oil pan right beside the water pump, the left side meaning if you look at the car front straight on. Does anybody know if this is the water pump's fault or not? I'm not sure where its leaking from though, but its a slow slow drip and its dripping to the left side of the oil pan and from the top, the pan where you take off the bolt for an oil change, again, i believe the problem is only in cold weather, any ideas??? thanks
