This morning I towed my car to Canadian tire to get new tires, balance them, align my steering( which included the replacement of the left inner rack and pinion socket) After all that was done I figured I might as well do an emmissions test while I have the car here so I'll know what I have to fix. So I did, and it passed, with flying colours. I thought for sure it would fail misserably. All I need now is to fix all the rust spots and my car will be on the road.
Just sharing the excitement.

why do ppl think canadian tire is a rip off? :-?
i think it has a great price for oil change and tire rotation....it only charges you mad if you are one of those "drive till it dies" person. all the mechanics are getting paid flat rate so it can't be that expensive. i always go there for my battery atleast once in 4 or 5 years....they got cheap tools and im not gonna go to Snap On and buy theirs....not till i turn into a licensed mechanic....heII....i admit....i like canadian tire
I towed it cause I thought it was safer. I didn't want to pay the fine. But I drove back home cause I finally realized that it was useless to tow if I can drive it. As for the Canadian Tire thing, they've have never let me down, it cost $400 can including the part I needed to align my steering ($130 and was sent from Toronto within 3hrs)and two new tires $70 each. What I like about canadian tire is that I can stand right beside my car while they work so I know exactly what they are doing. Some were suprised that that little car redlined at 8. While the mechanic who test drove it remarked its fun and handles well ( for a 15 yr old car ). So no more trash talking Canadian tire.
I haven't had a AE86 fail emmissions yet on me. Thoe I've only had 2. My first was rusted out really bad but even thoe in never passed the safty inspection it still passed emmissions.
At Canadian Tire you get the discount parts price without asking or getting a cash account which is usually the retail /Dealer price minus the discount at most other repair shops and small chain parts stores like LORDCo .
People seem to not know that repair places get jobber prices on parts and mark them up to retail price to sell to the customer. So those repair places ding you twice or more if they screw up your car for more sales.

Its funny how people think that emissions test is some sort of magical barrier that is almost impenetrable. Its not, its easy to pass an emissions test even with a highly modified car aslong as its running normally. A failure in emissions test means usually that there is something wrong with your engine, so its a good way to estimate your engines condition.
the emission test has become a cash cow for the provice requiring drivers to do it every other year and on every purchase of a used car. the co2 and co levels that have to be met are so high, that cars have failed simply becasue the fuel filter wasn't changed.
its not so bad on japanese cars. however on domestics, its quite common for an additional $100 - $200 to be spent jsut to get it to pass emissions. put it this way, our emission standards are even stricter than C.A.R.B and thats pretty fuckin tight!!!!
but i agree, if you know what you're doing, its not hard to pass it.
I dont see how a fuel filter would have anything to do with emissions. Anyhow I see your point, seems like you got it quite bad over there. Back home in Finland we have emissions test every year, levels arent that crazy especially for older cars, but nowadays it goes by the EU norms, so they're stricter now. However, turboing or supercharging requires a $1000 emissions test which doesnt even mean that you pass it, so that 1000 can be literally burnt away. Then again, we're not required to have EGR's, airpumps, HAI's or like installed and those can be taken off without any problems.
I've worked as a back parts guy and as a service guy for a few different Canadian Tire's and they have good mechanics for the most part and the prices they charge for jobber parts (parts sourced from somewhere else) were always at 10% above cost. One other thing that most don't know is that CTC is able to get you anything, I truely mean anything, as long as you're willing to pay for it and they're willing to do the work of getting it.
Someone correct me if i'm wrong...
But i thought cars that are 15yr or older don't need no emission test...
i wish that was true, mines 15yr but still needs the test. emissions is a drag! can't wait till it reaches the age when no emission requires, then i can do anything to it.
