I'd lube the cable first of all, but you'd be smart to start scouring the wreckers.

mine did the exact same thing on Tuesday

..my '95 Tercel that is, and I let it warm up for a while, weird..maybe it's a 'shwa thing cause I was on my way to the 'shwa from whitby when it happened

Ya, the cold can have weird affects.

I used to have a Mustang, when it was really really cold the whole car would be frozen stiff and it would ride really rough after hitting a few bumps on the road it would all let go at once with a loud bang ..then it would ride nice again....strangest thing ever.

I'd say oil the sheath and replace the cable.

hmmm... I was thinking about going to standard tomorrow morning (anyone wanna meet up?) maybe I'll pick one up just in case, but I think it might just be grease needed.
