clutch is slipping.....

hey guys, i have a 97' corolla CE 5 spd and recently i have been noticing my clutch has been acting weird. its like its slipping, and it is pissing me off! i know its the clutch, but i was wondering if there was ANYTHING else that could cause this without me needing to replace the clutch....because i really dont feel like shelling out that kind of money right now. thanks in advance. also, sometimes theyre is a nasty burning smell coming from it

I adjusted my clutch put a little play in the push rod & it fixed it for a long time.

Then when it started slipping again and couldn't be adjusted anymore I taught a girlfriend how to drive with a clutch; then loaned her the car for a month expecting the clutch to be totally smoked.
Au contraire; she must have burned the glaze off and the clutch was as good as new. Who woulda thought??
I must baby the clutch too much and glazed it from lack of hard use.. I dunno it doesn't make sense!??

or maybe she fuxed it up bad and ended up replacing it with a new one before you even noticed.

if your handy grab a Chilton/Haynes manual and do it yourself save $$$$$ ive done trans swaps/clutch's 10+ times no problem..

Yeah I was planning to do it myself. This will be my first clutch swap, so you may see future posts of me asking for help lol. What brand/type of clutch would you recommend? I drive my car fairly hard, so I am thinking I'm gonna need something a little better than just another stock clutch. Thanks for input in advance.

"Just another stock clutch" will be fine. You'll also have to get your flywheel checked and or resurfaced as well. It make no sense to swap a brand new clutch with a warped heat soaked and or scored flywheel.

Also count on changing the rear main seal while you'rer in there, also buy yourself two new transaxle seals as well. These are items that you might as well change while you're in there because they'll end up leaking at some point anyways. It's better to change them now than to have to cahnge them later. The rear main seal is the seal that seperates the transaxle from the block and lives around the outter perimeter of the crankshaft on the block. It also might be what you're smelling. Your clutch might be fine but you might be leaking oil from the seal which is causing your clutch to slip.

As far as where to buy a clutch, by far the cheapest and most reliable place online is :

Exedy is an OE replacement for your stock clutch and holds up fine, not to mention is a better brand name than most you'd find for two to three times the price.

Just as an FYI- My OE Exedy doesn't slip one bit and my car puts down 233 hp and 343 fpt.

brand wise DO NOT buy a cheapo clutch buy OEM or something from a well known company ex. exedy. And i would also recomend resurfacing the flywheel.
