Question 86 gts fuel delivery problems

Just got the car today. thought it was an 87 but it's an 86. anyways It won't start. We believe the pump is the issue. we got it to run for a few seconds on starting fluid, but it won't run on it's own fuel. i used a circuit tester on the harness going to the fuel pump. when i jump the test leads i get a hot wire going to the pump, when i just turn the ignition on i get none, but i get a hot wire when it cranks. Does it only turn on the pump when you crank it and when the engine is running. i know some cars it's runs when the ignition is on. what do you think, is it the pump. i don't want to drop the tank unless i have to. i checked the EFI relay, and fuse they're good. what seems to be the problem? any help would be appreciated, i've gotta et this thing on the road by atleast tuesday.

Jump the fuel pump relay and see if you can hear the fuel pump going.

Did you also test for spark?
