P0401 - EGR location

I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla CE with a 1.6L I4 engine that yesterdayseemed to lose power while accelerating and a 'CHECK ENGINE' light cameon, although today the car seems to be fine.

I pulled code P0401, apparently for insufficient EGR flow. I'd like totry and clean the EGR valve and tubes before replacing the part ifpossible

The problem is I don't know where the EGR valve is - I know where it is(and how to clean it) on my 1993 Mercedes, but not on my 1997 Corolla.I don't even know where to begin.

Anyone care to enlighten me where this valve is?

I put a short ram intake in my 97, and didn't plug back in the mass air flow sensor, not thinking much of it. Check engine light came on, diagnosis said EGR valve misread, so i plugged in the mass air flow, light went out, no codes thrown. see if your mass airflow sensor is in. if it is, i don't know where the EGR valve is, but maybe someone else does. if your MA sensor is out, put it in the air box where the filter is on the engine side. Drive it for a bit so your computer can get recallibrated and then see if its still throwing codes. hope that helps

Maybe a little late, considering when the original post was. Anyway, the EGR valve is in the back of the engine, towards the windshield wipers. You'll see what's been described as a "UFO looking" object. That is the EGR Vacuum Modulator. Follow the left (as you're looking at it) vacuum hose and it goes down towards the EGR valve. The EGR valve is actually mounted on the engine, about 6" or so below the EGR Vacuum Modulator. Hope this helps!!
