Question heater controls busted

i need some ideas on how to get around using the heater controls on my 86 GTS. the person who owned it before we got it evidentally got pissed pretty bad and punched the HVAC control panel. i know it got punched because when we first got it there was blood on the dash and on the carpet. the fan switch along with the sourch and mode switches work. only problem is the mode switch is a bit shifty. the real problem is the temperature switch is pretty much shot. it does nothing when you try to move it. i need to know how to control the temperature manually. like how to open the heater care, etc. never really have had a lot of experience with HVAC so i'm asking you all to help me out a little. plus the face is kinda screwed so if someone could tell me what order the modes are in i would appreciate it. thanks!

If the panel itself is damaged a visit to the local dealership or the local junkyard will take care of that, however theres cables running from the levers and you might want to check if they are all connected and they operate smoothly.

You should be able to manually open the water valve to the heater core from the engine compartment. Just look for the hot water hoses to the core, disconnect the non-functioning pull cable and move the valve to the open position.

To manually open it:

Look for the blue cable coming from the firewall. It's located behind the intake manifold. Pull it towards the front while someone is pulling the inside temperature control lever to the right.
