there are 2 stock engines for USDM ae 101's, the 1.6L 4A-FE and the 1.8L 7A-FE

the 4A makes 105hp 105ft/lbs the 7A makes 115hp 115ft/lbs theres virtually no other difference

Both are solid engines.

Only thing about those cars is that I would try to avoid getting one with a 3 sp automatic. They work great if most of your driving is done in the city. If you do highway driving, go for the 5sp standard or 4sp auto.

I don't know when they stopped using the 3sp transmission.
The difference is that on vehicles with a 4sp, there's an overdrive button the shifter or near there somewhere.

Maybe try to follow these instruction and decod the VIN to find the engine size.

Engine codes for Toyota Vehicles are usually shown on the emissions sticker under the hood. When you open the hood where the hood latch is usually there will be a sticker that lists emissions information. In one of the corners you will find the engine code. ONe other way on the Corollas is like someone said the 1.6 is a 4A-FE and the 1.8 is a 7A-FE. Normally you will not find the 7A-FE with the 3spd automatic. They almost all came with the 4spd overdrive. You will ususally find the 7A-FE in the DX and LE trim level. The 4A-FE will usually be found in the lower trim levels. All of this is usually you will need to do some checking when you find the car that meets what you are looking for.

there will also be a sticker on the right side of the motor saying 4AFE or 7AFE etc, usually on the timing belt cover.

As for the 3 or 4spd transmission, you can tell by how many times the transmission shifts. if it shifts twice.. its a 3spd, if it shifts 3 times its a 4spd.
