Question License plate bulb replacement

For the 2006 Corolla CE, I noticed in the owner's manual that the license plate bulbs should be replaced by a Toyota dealer. Mine don't need replacement right now, but it seems silly to take it back to the dealer just to have a license plate bulb replaced if you have average mechanical ability.

I saw a couple of references in this forum on how to replace them when the time comes. Would someone who's actually done it please verify that you must pull down part of the trunk lid lining, remove the exterior lamp assembly holder ( the part above the license plate that's painted body color ), remove the trunk lock, and then finally remove the lamp housings just to replace a burned-out bulb?

If you have a 06 its under warranty why not let them do it ...If you want to do it yourself its easy, just pop the plastic rivets out of the trunk lining(they have a tool for this but if your careful they will pop right out with no harm) I started at the bottom left then I popped out as many rivets as I needed to see/get hold of the bulb, turn it counter clockwise by its plastic base(might seem hard but it will turn out) then just replace everything in reverse, can't even tell you were there ...If you can't get the bulb out for some reason or your afraid it will break you can snap the whole unit out..unplug the wire and just squeeze the two horizontal holding tabs together and it will come right out above your license plate, change the bulb, snap it back in, put the wire on, the liner and your done... no big thing to do it took me 10 minutes ...good luck Radd
