What Best Oil Weight For 4AGE?

Should I run 10-40w because it's old?

What about those high performance oils weight like 15-20w, do they give better power, protection?

i'm reving 4-7k rpm on a daily basis.

I'm using mobil 1, 10-30w right now, but dunno if that's right.

I really want to try 15-20w high performance/racing oil, any ideas before I try?

i used what you used the day i went to the track.

didn't seem to harm the engine at all..

10w-30 should be fine.. unless you live near the equator..than you'd wanna go 15w..

I ran 15W50 (Mobil 1) all summer and it was awesome (drove to Cali and back). Much less oil consumption and I wasn't nearly as worried as driving through the desert with that lower viscosity.

whoops, I meant 15w50 like Migsman said, not 15-20

well the reason I want to try because it is factory fill on the ford mustang cobra I think, or something like that, high performance cars.

i'm wondering if it will give me more power, someone said it made their car ran better. who had an GSR engine swap into a civic.

Here's from valvoline webstite, what do you think?

Ernesto Ortega of TEXAS

Well, I own a Honda civic EX and within the past year did what is commonly done in the import world, I swapped my stock motor for a larger more powerful motor (a 1998 Integra GSR motor). This was done in August of 2001. I followed along the lines of everyone else and ran Mobil 1 5w-30 tri-sythetic in my car (which is a recommendation of Honda), and since that date, my car did not run as it should have. After replacing several things on the car (fuel lines, filters, pump, seals), I took the advice from a friend and switched to VR1 20W-50 racing oil. The difference was immediately noticeable. My engine was running as it should have been all this time.

Honda motors have VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control) and when I ran the Mobil 1 oil, my engagement point (the point where my motor would switch from the less aggressive cam lobe to the more agressive lobe) was at 5500rpm (normal position is 4500 rpm). Of course, this is dependent on many factors like throttle postion and oil preasure, but try as I might, no matter how hard I pushed the pedal, it was never lower. I switched to VR1 oil and noticed first of all that my car will warm up faster, will actually let me engage VTEC at 4500 rpm, and seems to run a bit quieter as well.

As many people know, Hondas thrive in the high rpms (6000+) and my car frequently sees gear pulls to redline with no problems whatsoever. I would gladly recommend this oil to any Honda enthusiast.

I'd use the weight the manual tells you to use.

I'm pretty sure VTEC engagement is eith 4800 or 5200 RPM. I highly doubt that just changing the motor oil would affect the engagement point, even if I'm wrong about the RPM. Sounds like he bought a dud. :P

for sure. i cannot begin to imagine how motor oil would ahve any effect on vtec engagement as valve timing and lift is electronically controlled on honda engines.

thats the thing with alot of diy and shadetree mechanics. most of the improvements and failures are pyscho-sematic.

i got a reply from Mobil 1, they said it is okay to run 20w50 oil for everyday use, and that you don't have to do a flush.

i'll try 20w50 next oil change, that'll be in one month or on christmas vacation when i have time. although it's not a gas saver oil, if any gains, then thats worth it.

I'm crossing my fingers for all goes well...
