VW Beetle Vs. Corolla

Hi, my name is Jason and I have been pondering a new car purchase. The cars that I'm interested in are the Corolla and the New Beetle. I was hoping some of you with the newer (2000+) Corollas' could answer a few questions for me:

1. Is the car really capable of going 200k-300k miles if taken care of?
2. What kind of problems have you had with your Corolla?
3. Am I to understand correctly that the 2003 Corolla is a completely different car from the previous models?
4. And finally, those of you that have already purchased a 2003 what are your initial impressions of the car?

Thanks, I hope I didn't load you down with to many questions. I look forward to your answers... 8)

1: Yeah. Easily.
2: Mine's second hand, but my bro got his new. While in near stock form, the starter crapped out once or twice. And he crashed it once.
3: Yep.
4: Can't help you here, bud. Sorry.

1.Yes, That is what they are renowned for.
2. Two '03 LE's - no problems
3. Brand new from the tires up.
4. My (considerably) better half and I like ours. My only dislike is the shape of the seat bottom combined with a tall driver and 5 speed. We each have approx. 3000 miles on them thus far. Mileage is top notch and performance is good for a small engine, better than I expected.

Rollas are known for their reliability. With the recent redesign and addition of the Type-S, I think they look amazing.

I've never had experience with V Dub, but FYI- The new beetle is coming avail with a droptop 8)

The 2002 Beetle got poor marks for overall reliability by Consumer Reports. Don't remember what the Corolla got.

I think every car bought from new is reliable, only after a few thousand miles or kilometres do they begin to show their deficiiancies and gremmlins.

I guess it depends on what you're after, japaneese build quality or German build quality. Go out and test drive them both and see what you like best.

In my experience I have both a German and Japaneese car, I would personally go for the VW.

Well, the '03 Corolla does have the same engine as the 2000-2002 (same steering wheel too) but the rest is very different. The main difference is that it is larger.

My car has given me zero problems (2001 Corolla w. 36,000 miles)

The Corolla has been rated at or near the top of it's class in reliability by consumer reports for the last 15 years or more and it is the most sold car model in the worls ever.

VWs are good. The new beetle is just a Golf platform with a dif. body, so try the golf as well unless you are sold on the bug's goofy looks.

The Bug cannot compete with the Corolla in gas mileage (except the diesel, which has weak HP).
The base modle Bug engine is slower than the Corolla, but they do offer bigger engines and the turbo one, but these bring the price up to significantly more than the Corolla.

Breakdown:
If you want to spend the least amount of money and get the most efficient car, get the Corolla. If you have more money to spend, and are more concerned with power and nice extras like leather, get a Golf GTI 1.8T. If you want the same thing with goofy looks, get a beetle Turbo S

Chris

yeah my corolla's starter was changed once..
but other than that .. it is REALLY impressive w/ reliability compared to many other cars..
got it 94' and no major problems.. got 170KMs on it... not miles..
just makes a bad idling noise..

Not because I'm a Toyota fan, but I do recommend the Corolla over the Beetle for several reasons..

1- The Corolla is an actual 5 seater car vs. in the beetle people have to bend their necks to fit in the back..
2- The Corolla has a great size trunk compared to almost no existant in the Beetle.
3- Parts are easier to get for the Corolla and it's easier to work on the car in general.
4- The Corolla is more reliable and eocnomic overall..

That's my argument.. My aunt has a 2002 Beetle and my cousin has the Type S Corolla.. And I'd take the corolla over the beetle anyday..

... wish i had a corolla...

anyway, are the corollas still japan-made? i heard somewhere (dont remember where) that theyre being made in the states now (for US customers)... someone correct me please.

id take a corolla over a beetle anyday. who cares if it has a turbo option? chances are you wont get the turbo one anyway... prolly not even worth the expense.

if we were comparing the rolla to the golf gti, itd be a different story...

No toyotas are made world wide, so probably the US ones are not made in japan. Its profit basis again, and even if it was, it wouldnt be in JDM spec anyhow. Just like VW's are made in the USA, same thing.
