Oil consumption

Another question: do new (2000+) Corollas' burn oil? The reason I'm asking is it seems I recall someone mentioning this. Also, I've heard that the New Beetle burns oil to.

don't know much about it, but i think every car consumes oil. Some just consume more than others. if people say that their cars don't consume, then probably it does, its just so small that it's not noticable, or measurable and that why it seems it doesn't consume.

Toyotas are not oil burners as a rule. I don't know about the Vdub. If you want a carefree low maintenance car no VW will filll that bill.
My '03 Corolla did not use any noticeable oil during break in (a first for me) nor has it used any now @ 3000+ miles with a switch to synthetic at 1000 miles.

True, corollas engines have been done with such an experience over the years (especially with the 4A, that was kept basically the same for many years), that they have the knowledge on what they do and which might lead to problems in the future.
