AE86 CAI on a 4A-GE

it's for an 86 gts. I'm more a chevy guy and don't know a lot about these yet so bare with me. i'm not familiar with the sensors on them. i come from the land of OBD 1.5 which is a story in itself. if i were to replace the airbox and tubing with a cai tube and a cone filter. first of all is this doable on this car. i have no idea what the sensors on the tubing and airbox do, or how to adapt them to a tube. so in general would anyone care to edjucate me on this stuff or arleast point me in the right direction to edjumicate myself. looking under the hood of this thing makes me scratch my head everytime. i think i need a haynes manual. thanks in advance.

You could but you have to remember, unless its a MAP sensored 4AGE (mostly in Japan) then you have to make sure you're including the AFM or MAF (Air Flow Meter, the black box before the airbox) in the tubing. It would basically go like this.. Intake Manifold - Pipe - AFM - AFM adaptor - Extra CAI Pipe - Cone filter.

There are no CAI's for 4AGEs that I know off, however there are short ram intake kits going around.

check the link below and just copy the adaptor, it's pretty straightforward. once fabricated you'll still need the AFM like banana-boy REN said earlier!

True you can just go from the AFM to the pipe, but if looks are what you're after then replacing the black tube with a nicer shinier pipe would probably work.

Rob_277, I did say there are NO CAI's available for the 4AGE that I knew of, so yeah.. you would have to fabricate your own.

The link mikey micro posted from EBAY is what I got on the 89 GTS but on the 90 I have a mushroom filter instead of a cone, its not a CAI but you would still need that AFM adaptor if you wanted to expand the piping from the AFM out.

This is an old pic of my 89 GTS with my old Weapon R filter.. I have a Ractive now. (don't worry about the "right there" part, I was showing someone where the idle screw was)

nah shiny isn't what i'm going for. lord knows the car aint much to look at. just trying to think of a relatively easy way to let her breathe better. is it possible to do a FWI on these. i was going to make a FWI for the monte before it blew out the tranny. right now my biggest intention is hacking off that damn muffler. i'm thinking with the thing off i atleast won't have the rattling noise. damn thing sounds ilke a fart can exhaust.

sorry kinda lost this thread for a bit.
for all unknowing ricers! just kidding.
anyways a FWI = Fender Well Intake
self explanatory bassically routes the intake tubing and filter into the fenderwell which gets it out of the engine bay and into colder air making a more true CAI.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh! hehehe.. I guess you would have to make an opening on the fender well to get the air in there though.
