Anyone have their A/C break? Can I fix it?

Well here's the story. I bought my car from my sister, and a grandma owned it earlier. It was never driven hard, until I owned it. Even then its an auto, so I can't really be that hard on it. I bought it in seattle for 2500 with around 65k on it it in June 04. Last summer the A/C went out on it. The guy quoted me 1250 to replace it. Now there is no way in hell I'm going to pay that. But I live in AZ, and it gets HOT. So is there a way I can fix it, he said everything needs to be replace for a reasonable price?

If not its not really a big deal. My Fiance drives it mostly while I ride my bike. I could just buy a new car and keep it for the few days it does rain down here.
