When the car is fully warmed up and in gear it idles around 750 rpm or a little above. In neutral (park) it idles usually almost near 1000, sometimes at 1000.
I read in Haynes manual that normal idle speed should be 750 when the car is in neutral, but mine is close to 1000. Should I be concerned or is this not really important?
It's no big deal really, most 4AGEs idle at about 1000 after age, so I would assume the same would go for the 4AFEs and 7AFEs. If you start to fiddle with the idle you'll notice that it either idles at 1000rpm OR it idles at like 600-700 or lower, specially in the summer.
That seems a bit high for idle speed. That 1000 would seem to be what it would run if it were cold and warming up. Possibly a temp sensor is sending wrong info to computer telling it car is cold when it is in fact warmed up. Does it idle higher than 1,000 when first started up cold? If it idles at 1,000 when cold and no higher that could be your problem. Does temp gauge register in the normal range and do you get heat from heater? Maybe the thermostat. Another possibility could be a leak from a vaccum hose.
for a 7A-FE toyota calls for 700 RPM +/- 50 RPM Should do 700 with everything off and 800 with electrical stuff on. this is all in neutral.
Id try cleaning the throttle body mine used to do that drop-off to 500 then come back shitee then i cleaned the throttle body and IAC valve and it helped alot. If the IAC is stuck that might also be causing your problem.

Starting and warming up it idles above 1000, definitely well above 1000 on cold mornings.
Temp gauge stays dead center (maybe an increment below) while driving, so that's fine. The heater also works fine.
I took it in for 90000 mile service a couple thousand miles ago and I'm pretty sure they cleaned the throttle body then. Also I took off the airbox while changing the contacts in my starter solenoid and got a look at the throttle body and it looked clean.
Idk if its a vaccum leak... wouldnt that also affect performance while driving? (Car drives fine only idle is the problem.)
Could you please tell me more about the IAC valve (know what it looks like, not sure what it does), how to check it, and/or how to adjust idle.
I have the 4af, no thottle body because it's carb'd
when my engine is warming up with the auto choke it revs to 2500 - 3000 and will slowly climb as it warms up.
When I turn my lights, blower, press the breaks in a drive thru, it all lowers the rpm :P
but normally it will idle around 1000 - 1200, the engine sounds healthy when idling at those speeds so it doesn't bother me

My Corolla is similar. 4AF motor, auto transmission. In gear, it idles abt 650-750 rpm but in neutral it goes up to 1000 rpm. And when in gear with the brakes applied, the car vibrates quite abit. Any idea if anything can be done to fix this?
I'm getting terrible mileage on my car. 25 liters gets me abt 200km, mostly city driving. I've changed the air filter and fuel filter, but there wasn't a noticeable improvement. Any idea what might help?

I doubt that, cause most toyotas run higher rpms during warmup in cold weather. For example, sometimes when it's really cold mine will go up to almost 2500rpms until its warmed up, and then will go down to 1000

Same here. If it's really really cold it goes up past 2000 while warming up.
Can anyone help with how to adjust idle or info on IAC valve?
Is it worth playing around with it or can I mess something up?
like I said, my carb'd 4af will rev 3000 - 4000 when it's really cold slowly climbing until it warms up and will eventually drop to around 1000 unless it's still cold when I tap the pedal, then it will rev ar 1200 - 1500. once a car gets older the factory specs may not be true anymore. Depends on how that engine was used, how everything is worn and so on. I say keep lowing the rpm until it starts to shake then raise it until it stops, maybe a little bit more so when you run your fan and so on all at once it doesn't lower the rpm to the point where it shakes again
Yeah I know what you're talking about, everything shaking at low rpm. Happens sometimes to me but not too bad.
Anyway I ran a diagnosis on my IAC valve (connect two points in the diagnosis box with a paper clip and rpms should go up for about 5 seconds) the rpm went up as needed and then dropped back down and stayed at an even 750.
I think it's just random fluctuations in idle speed.
