First post - tips?

Hey.

My dad just called me up to tell me he's found an 81 Corolla sedan in the neighborhood for $700. It needs some work (most noticeably, he says the steering wheel feels sloppy, although the steering action is good), but as a regular on other car forums, I know a thing or two about ettiquette and wanted to introduce myself and inquire as to whether any of you guys could offer me some specific key words to search on.

I've already done some basic research and I'm kinda optimistic that my dad, after having his Dodge Neon stolen twice has just stumbled into something really cool. The thought of him rolling an old school Toyota 3TC with side-draft Webers and a sweet exhaust is really cool. Are there any 81 Corolla-specific issues I should address immediately upon delivery of the car? My DSMs are prone to timing belt failure, so I'm sure there's things that these cars are known to need extra attention paid.

Finally, is there a way to refer to this particular car on this forum that I should keep an eye out for? For example, my 97 Talon is a 2GNT DSM and my 91 Galant VR4 is just called a GVR4. Should I keep my searches to just "1981" or is there some special keyword that will open the gates for me?

That's a TE72 Corolla I believe (T= motor type, E= Corolla code, 7X= Series #), you won't find that much info on this site about TE72s as there are only a couple of members with those cars, but you can check out www.toyota3tc.com where mostly everyone has this car.

BTW I also found an 81 TE72 Sedan for $700 before, I wonder if it's the same one (Toronto area) I was told by another member to stay away from it.

Haha. Thanks, man. If this is the same one, it somehow made it's way all the way down to Phoenix, Arizona. A bit of a trek for a car one should "stay away from."

I've seen the 3tc site, but this site could be useful too, right? I'm on so many forums these days, it's hard to keep them all straight. :P

How useful a forum is depends on the number of members with the same car as you. Too bad there's not too many old schoolers on the site aside from a few members.
