raidiator hoses

ok, my mechanic says that my lower/upper radiator hoses need replaceing and something about a coolant flush or something. now my question is, can i do it my self ?

its a 97 corolla CE. is it SAFE for me to do it?
what would i need?
what do i need to do to do it?

because they are charging me like $400 to do the upper/lower hoses and the coolant flush

Their trying to rip you off....Even a dealer like Toyota only charges $79 for a coolant flush(just got a coupon special for that) Granted you need new hoses but that shouldn't cost an extra $200-250 ..And put it this way how could you ever tell if they gave you a reverse flush ...I bet many just drain and fill ripping people off ....I would check at your local parts store I'm sure they sell a "do it yourself" flush kit...If your handy you should have no problem and you could always lend it to your friends to use afterwords ...Just remember to "Burp" all of the trapped air out once you finish .. .....Good Luck...Radd Guy

Cooling system service is quite easy. Just get a pan to drain your old coolant and drain it. Remember to dispose of it properly, as coolant is harmful to animals. Refill the cooling system with water and the flush you choose. Pretty much any of them will work. Follow the instructions on the bottle.

Once the motor is cool again and your flush is out of the system, remove your radiator hoses. Also at this time Inspect your heater hoses as well. Many an engine has been roasted due to a blown heater hose. The hoses should be firm but not hard. They should not be squishy or spongy either. Also inspect for cracks bubbles or cuts in the hose.

While you have the cooling system drained also replace the thermostat, like the heater hose this little $6 part has killed many engines.
