A few more photos have been posted showing the final crosshatch finish from a Flexhone. The Flex-hone removes very little material, making very difficult to remove previous deeper scratches from the stones, but it was a definite improvement. Hopefully, the bore will wear smoother over time for better sealing on the rings.

I was able to borrow a precision dial caliper and measure the bore diameter 1/2 inch inset from the top of bore and compare it with spec. to the 1/1000 inch. Fortunately, it is still well within range and none of the bores are out of round (at least at the top). Measurements were 3.190 +/- .0005 at the 8 points measured. Yeah, living next door to a machinist and mechanic has been very helpful.

The engine block took a long time time to clean as it is still in the car. This is an extremely critical step and I used more than 10 buckets of hot water and tide detergent, dousing the block from above and below while scrubbing with a nylon brush. Rinsing with more water, repeating, etc. Compressed air was used to spray out water and drive away moisture. Bores started to develop rust haze quickly and were coated with 10W30 oil. The crankcase was sprayed with WD40. It is wrapped in Saran Wrap at the moment while the rest of the parts are being cleaned for assembly.

Good deal. Egg will be down lower on the thrust side of the wall, the way the pistons rock on the rods. Back to the vibration tho I'm more cuious if cleaning out the intake does anything. I know it has nothing to do with oil consumption unless tied to an out of spec internal balance problem (worn scuffed pistons) I doubt it. maybe EGR PCV sounds more in line. But mine exhibited the same annoying front fender vibration he mentioned earlier. Like I say I wish someone would nail it down what it is because nearly every Corolla I've seen has it. True not when new but not at a particular miliage either. I put in a 60K mile engine that sounded the exact same as the 200K I pulled out. That particular car was a overheated one from a bad radiator. My nephews car never has had a problem and does it almost exactly the same. My G/Fs does it too with 116K. None of these cars burn or leak a drop of oil. I jst never pulled the intake to clean, only sprayed a can of TB cleaner through them. However if yours quits vibrating I'll gleen back through and try and figure what could be a culprit.

Agreed, that area in the bore was glazed at the thrust point. There is nothing to change an out of round cylinder save for a full engine re-build.

Anyways, cleaning out the intake would not do much unless some sensor, vacuum line, or EGR valve is blocked right? There has to be something else to this problem since it is so common. I find it interesting to hear the same models with lower milage do not do it, but have never been able to compare like this. I have read that the rubber damper on a crankshaft pulley (absorbs torsional vibration from the crankshaft) can lose its effectiveness over time. I examined mine awhile back and it had some minor cracks in the thin rubber, but appeared just fine. Unfortunately, this would be way too expensive to just replace on an assumption. The RH engine mount (front of engine, up high on passenger wall) is the first one to wear out and can also be a source. My engine seemed to be vibrating from that area the most. Unfortunately, putting in a new mount may help damp the vibration, but not eliminate what is causing it in the first place. I doubt this helps as I have yet to figure out the cause.

Exclamation

I fou have high mileage, count on the motor mounts and houses being old and cracked, detuned engines, carb in bad shape, ignition and plug wiring,, all combine to make an engine run bad and shake,, and I did not tell of all the things that can make it shake,, including worn engine parts... a long list indeed..

New Thread Posted

I was getting off topic from the original thread so I just put up a new thread for all the info I have posted so far here. It has been condensed and reorganized. Please continue to make comments in the thread titled:

Replacing Valve Seals and Piston Rings on 7A-FE to Reduce Oil Consumption

Thank you!
