I stripped my AE86...

Well I was bored the other day and decided to have a look under the rear bench of my AE86... I took Borohachidesu's advice and went ahead with the disassembly of the rear bench... one thing led to the next... and at the end I had ended up stripping my entire interior....

The end result was a big hole (which I had known about before)... I continued to bang away all the bad rust to clean away the hole... heres what i got

(until I get a digicam I'll use this pic to demonstrate the position/size of th hole...)

I believe a cross member goes right through there... not sure.... but u can literally stick ur foot in it... U got brembo??? so what I got FLINTSTONE BRAKES!

Also... the rear mounting points for where the driver seat is are rusted and will need to be replaced with fresh metal...

Anyways I was looking for ur opinions.... Keep or Let her go?
How hard will it be to fix? is it just a simple job of cutting away the rust and welding on a fresh metal plate?

any help would be appreciated thx

well if a cross member goes there, and its gone... you might not get it to pass cert.
other than that, if there isnt a lot of rust elsewhere, weld in a plate, and keep the car. thats my opinion.

How much money you got on hand? Cuz that will cost in the $1,000's to repair multiple holes. the more rust holes the more $k it will cost. And since the bottem is that bad how bad is the top? If the top is as bad as the bottem your looking at possibly over $5k in body work.

Get your metal from a real supplier like North York Iron or any jobber type vendor. You'll get more selection and better pricing, plus they will cut your order for free most of the time. Good luck with your resoration.

metal supermarket will be your best bet. north york iron while cheap, will only sell in large quantities..meaning they'll sell only a length (24 feet) of piping even though you only need 1 foot.

gauging whether its worth to keep or not can only be based on your own ambition, resources and budget. for me, i would keep it because i know how to weld, plan on getting a welder, have mno problem taking a long time to fix it and i love re-creating things.

but for the guy who doesn't like any of those things, perhaps selling the car and looking for a better body is in the best interests.

it just depends on what you wnat.

i don't think it would be *that* expensive to get that one hole patched up at a body shop. I had a hole in a floor pan once upon a time, and I had that as well as another area of rust fixed (cut and weld metal) for abou $1K

but for sure you'd want to make sure it was done "right" because a hole like that is certainly making the unibody structurally weaker. the hole I had was a bit further forward, under that front cross member. After I had it fixed, the car felt noticably stiffer.

Welding can be fun, if you dont know how too, learn, I along with many others on her I'm sure could give you a hand with that. Once you can weld, you will see how usefull it can be. Nick even does custom suspension, all because he can weld. I say keep it, and do it yourself, why spen 1k on a little hole that will only take like an hour to fix yourself?

Great news...

Recently my family had some furniture welded... apparently the guy who did it is willing to teach me how to do it... he'll charge me for the welding and the metal... but i get to do all the dirty work... either way I think I can save a lot of money doing it this way

...hopefully I'll get lucky

But... arn't there replacement floor Panels u can buy and weld into place???
just wondering because i thought i heard someone talking about doing that on their ae92....

The price I gave was assuming that the top may have been as bad as the bottem. I've got a bunch of estimates on how much it will cost me to remove all the rust from my car and the Average is around $4,000. I have the money to get it done so now it is just a matter of finding which one of these guys have a good reputation.

the problem is, if you learn how to tig weld, while its the best method to learn, its also the most useless due to costs. unless you have some serious cash stashed away and have internal friends at Hydro One, there's no way in hell that you can setup a tig welder in your house.

tig welder = $1500 - $4000
argon gas = $25 per tank which will last you two weeks at best.
tungstens = $50 per pack
rods = $75 - $150 per pack depending on what metal
welders mask = $150 - $500
welding smock and gloves = $150
hydro bill to operate welder = priceless
