alltrac corolla wagon timing

Hi,

I've got a corolla alltrac wagon with a 4afe motor in it. I got it with a rebuilt head but then it blew a head gasket so I got it for cheap. We replaced the head gasket but now can not get it to start. The motor will not start now, though it did before we took it apart. i'm thinking we got the timing wrong when we took the head off, as you know you have to take the cams out so maybe we messed up the timing. It turns over, we're getting spark and there's compression, so I am at a loss as to what is going on and so I think it must be timing. ANy quick ways to check the timing? Can I take the distributor out and re-install it with piston 1 at TDC to remedy the timing problem? Also how are the cams or where are the marks to re-align the cams when they are re-installed? I'm thinking we messed it up somewhere? ANy ideas? THanks for your help!

The cams have installation marks on them, the exhaust is under a tooth and the intake is under a pit, align the pit with the tooth and roll the cam down into place with the gears meshed. I did this and still something is not right. My distributor only goes in one way, so no I don't believe that would do anything, expecially if your cams are misaligned.
