Has anyone actually have one of these in their cars?
how is it?
is it worth it?
did you do it yourself?
did you use the stock 20V ECU, or did you have a aftermarket, programing system?
there's only a handfull of guys in Ontario that have one....and none of them in a ae86.
There's alot of work needed to be done in order to fit a 20v into a 86. Check club4ag.com....extensive references there for that engine.
If it is going into an 86, you will need to make yer own water lines, fuel lines, wiring and have access to a dli or cut a whole in your firewall so the dizzy can fit.
In my mind....not worth it. I would have to say the best bang for the buck 4ag has to be the gze.
If i drop a late model GZE into my AE92 GTS will it slide right in? With only problems of wiring? I can do the swap at my buddy's garage but need to know if it's a direct fit. I want to know if there are any complications at all. If there are only problems then i will try for the swap next summer.
likely not. Pretty much 90% of the service done on 86's is done by the owner. Not a whole lot of people will know how do preform such a task. The frequent way of doing it is to research it on club4ag.com, ask questions and do the task yer self...or quarterback someone you know who has the tools and the equipment.
the gze fits perfect, you will have trouble with the top mount intercooler but that can always be relocated, or you can get the really cool hood scoop.
thanks
andrew

Actually there ARE 20V AE86's in Ontario dude! There's one near my house that's owned by a shop (Applewood Automotive) and they go rallying with it. It's a blue coupe.
Torontobud, is that you MARC? Dude, come over here I'll put that motor in your car with my bare hands! hehehe...
There are many shops I know, it all depends on what kinda person you are...rich or poor, I know some shops that do things, just give me the heads up and I'll send them to you.
i think the timing belt is the same and oil filter. however, water pump, altenator, power steering pump, spark plugs and cables are unique to japan...i might be wrong so double check...
the tps is different. the 20v uses individual throttle boddies which are interlinked. it also uses map sensor which is not offered on 4ages here. those are the biggest differences. of course the internals are different too.
no no no no no. your selection of an engine should be based on you're preference of power and responsiveness rather than soley on availability, cost and parts.
Obviuosly, you are looking for some competetiveness out of the ae86, or you would not be asking questions about different setups or power advantages correct? So you should pick your engine and the following modifications based on the feel and how much you like it.
the gze and 20v are vastly different in characteristics. the 20v tends to have a peaky power band and torque curve. as a result the lower end tends to be non-existant. the gze tends to be more of a mid range engine that is lovely for hwy passing and is responsive through all rpms although it tends to go flat at the top end (however, this could be just a trait of the ae86's short gearing).
they all feel different and they all have different qualities. from the blue hat, red hat, gze to 20v choose one that will satisfy your taste.
