I have a 1986 Toyota LX 4 door hatchback with a 4A-C egine (carburated), automatic four speed(overdrive). Front wheel drive. The car has only 140,000 miles (225,000 Km) The entire car is in very good shape and an excellent commuter car except for the lack of power.
Is there any way I could increase the present power by 10 - 15 horse. OR do I need to swap in a different engine. If I swap engines, which will fit the existing transmission, etc. with very minimal modifications????
Any help would by appreciated. Thanks to all the Toyota faithful.
I'd say probably carbs and maybe headers, I couldn't see why the 4AGE headers wouldn't fit on a 4AC
As for swaps.. the question I never get tired of answering, you have tons of possibilities. Any 16V and 20V 4AGE's and 4AGZEs will fit your car. The AE82s (the code for your car) is very popular in Australia/New Zealand and I've noticed there are tons of people down there who do 20V and 4AGZE swaps into their cars.
BTW post pics man.. these cars are so rare now. I had an 86 Chevy Nova-Rolla.. 4AC powwa baby!

How about that the ports don't line up. could be made to fit with some cutting and bending.

Yea thats mostly in austrila though, we can get factory 20v's here. Infact I have one .
Yes and engine swap is probably the best way to up the power in your car, but after doing a couple of engine transplants, I can say its cheaper and easier just to buy a faster car.
All the info I have received so far indicates a 4AGE swap, but the 4AGE is fuel injected.
Is there a 4AG which is carburated???????????? Carbuated would be alot easier swap.

No they were all injected, you can convert them to carbs but IMO your much better off with fuel injection (espicially in a road car)

if you want to run carbs on the 4A-G, you'll have to go with dual side drafts. it'll be more expensive believe it or not than making the EFI work on your car. also if you live in an area where there's so many different elevations you might have a hard time tuning the dual carbs. i've done the 4A-Ge with dual webers before and looking back now, there's actually more cons than pros when i did it.
my old set-up..

I ran a 4A-F with dual carbs, it was fun while it lasted, but getting it to run properly is hard...
