Does anyone know what can cause a raspy noise when accelerating? I have a 2001 Corolla and it only makes the noise when I press the gas. It does not do it all the time. I thought it was the spark plugs but I changed them and it was not that. I got a better air filiter and that was not the problem. Maybe my fuel injectors?? please help... Thanks
If you ask me its just throttle opening, when I press the gass or just open up the throttle theres a loud surge sound through the intake I wouldnt discribe it as raspy but it depends, does it get louder when you open up fully?.
raspy? Sounds like an exhaust leak to me, but if you havent touched the exhaust lately then thats probably not it. Could be knock (detonation)... do you know what knock sounds like? Its almost like tons of marbles bouncing around in your engine...
Sorry.. Let me describe it better. It is more of a hissing noise. It is coming from the engine. It sounds almost like when you have a hair spray can that is almost empty and the last little bit is trying to spray out. It does not make the noise when I am in park and I hit the gas, only when I am driving.

Well that doesn't help me to much I've never used hairspray, but I think it might just be the intake whine, mine for example hisses once in a while I don't think anything is seriously wrong with the ENGINE, but open you hood with the car on and pull on the throttle to rev it and try and locate the sound as best you can.
I use an axe body spray and im just imagining the sound as that spraying?
Don't worry to much about it if it was something serious in the engine you'd notice it running rough sound weird or acting weird probably, just you know check the oil if you haven't yet.
heres my dilema...so a week ago a clump of ICE fell off a truck and hit underneath my 98 LE corolla. It was a loud buzzing and humming sound when in idel and accelarating, now just a couple of hours ago i dunno what happened but the noise (while i was driving) just got 10X worse, now it sounds like a muscle car but louder the more i hit the accelarator the louder it is. when i let go, no sound. a couple of my friends says it could be a hole in the manifold, or exhaust pipe, any ideas? and how much do you think it'll cost? the sound sounds like its comming near the back of the engine closer to the "cockpit" of the car more then the bottom or front of the car. is it possible to patch up a hole if there is one?

i got it welded, it was actually the front exhaust pipe connecting from the manifold to the catalytic converter. when i just put a new exhaust pipe on it, started makeing the sound again. can welding break apart, cuz i know it can crack. but how long can the crack last until the welded pipe breaks apart? can it even break apart?
If it breaks again, its probably because there is no flex pipe or flex flange in between. The fukcers that did my exhaust a long time ago on one of my Civics did that to me, quoted me for the exhaust, got it done, about a month down the road it breaks.. I'm like so I go back and dude tells me.. Oh you don't have a flex pipe! I say.. wasn't that part of the price?? he says.. no, you have to specify if you want one, its $75 extra. WTF!
