Removing Head

I'm working on replacing the head gasket on my son's 98 Corolla (man you have to take darn near everything off or out of the engine compartment to remove the head!) Does anyone know if the head will come off without unbolting the exhaust manifold from the exhaust system? Yea I do know it has to be unbolted from the head but I was wondering if the head would come off with the exhaust manifold still in the engine bay.

Thanks!

Bill

you have to remove the o2 sensor, in order to unbolt the pipe from the manifold. there is also 1 14mm bolt from the exhaust manifold to a bracket on the block. its a few inches from the pipe bolts and the head on the bolt faces the passenger side of car.

Did you remove the timing cover? if not, there is a 10mm bolt that goes through the timing chain guide into the cylinder head.

that is an interference motor, so be careful on your timing.

What do you mean by "an interference motor"?

I'm still working on getting the timing cover off. Trying to work on this as job & other "duties" around the house allow.

Good to know to take the O2 sensor off first. I'm trying to avoid pulling the exhaust manifold if possible. One less thing to remove if possible.

Interference motor: If the timing is off, there is the possibility that the valves will hit the pistons.

leave the exhaust manifold on the head, no reason to remove it.

That's kinda what I suspected an interference motor was. Definitely no fun getting valve timing off. A buddy did that once on his motorcycle... simple project became expensive project!
