Difficult to put in 1st gear

OK. I'm going down the road in whatever gear. Say I'm at jogging speed or higher. My car will not go into first gear. I wont smash it in there cause I dont want to hurt my car, but it doesn't make grinding noises or anything. It just won't go in until I slow down to around walking speed.

This is a problem, because when I'm downtown you can't follow people in 2nd because it starts boggin, and I'm thinkin "first gear would be nice right about now"
My clutch could be in a lot better shape, but if that info helps or not, I'm not sure.

Anyone know whats broken or worn out? cause I know it's somethin.

i have had 4 transmissions that do the same thing i find if you blip the throttle it will slip in better, i donno why but it seems to work, 1st gear always seems to do that.

compleatly normal lol alot of transmissions do that my friends truck does that and its an '01 so theres nothing to worry about its just your syncros doing their job.i would only worry when it grinds instead of not letting you go into 1st

You're really only supposed to go into first at a dead stop or close to it really.. as soon as you move a little, your transmission will complain in more than one way. Usually that "crunch" sound comes to mind.

mine has gotten better about it since i put in the heavy duty amsoil tranny fluid. Took a little while driving it first but i went down to first from about 15 mph, whipped a u-turn and off she went. it does help to rev-match. i love to heel-toe my 'yota. pedals are set perfect for it.
