I'm getting ready to purchase a car, and I'm trying to decide between an XRS & an S model Corolla. I know all about the XRS, but I was wondering if maybe I can do more with the engine of the S. I also worry about the reliability of the 2ZZ, as I've seen more issues with that particular engine than I saw with the S model.
I was considering looking at some domestics, but after reading all the anti-toyota crap on C&G, I'm only going to buy a Toyota to piss off losers like them. In any case... Some thoughts on 1ZZ parts & potential vs. 2ZZ would be helpful. I can't find a lot of parts for the 1ZZ that are performance oriented, so any help would be appreciated.
due to the 05+ being dbw I'd go with an xrs or an 03-04 S. There are mods galore for the 03-04 engines but the 2zz comes with balls and toyota reliability. I guess it really comes down to how much money you want to spend
if you seriously like modding your car then get the 1zz-fe powerplant. Alot more ont eh market and more potential... just takes some money. If you want something quick out of the box and want to do some minor stuff like an intake and exhaust then you'd probably want the XRS.

Honestly, I've had a hard time finding many performance parts for a Corolla. Not even TRD had a whole hell of a lot.
I found quite a bit of stuff from monkeywrench racing, but I'd like more options than that.
TRD makes a supercharger for the 1zz, which puts the S with the s/c at about the power as an XRS. Only like adsaba said, get an 03-04, which are not drive by wire.
Remember this ain't a Civic.. Walmart doesn't carry mods for your car Corolla parts are harder to find but they are there.
As for the 2ZZ performance, I'd love to see the mods that are being done for the 2ZZ in the Lotus Elise eventually make it to the Toyota 2ZZ's.. I can just imagine prices though..

When I was still at the Dealership, I read an article about a company called Forced Fed that was making a turbo kit for the Lotus Elise that bumped it up to 275 HP. That seems a little high given that engine produces 170-180HP, but still it's very enticing. I'm sure you could get that to work with the Corolla with a bit of work
If you want a fast car don't look at the Corolla line, they are poor starting platforms for performance.
I have an 05 XRS and I love it....sometimes. From a stoplight dragracing for fun on weekends out in the country or wahtever, the VVTL-i is awesome and will surprise the hell out of unsuspecting Honda/Camero/Mustang drivers. The thing is that the power is useless daily driving. To pass someone I drop from 6th to 4th and gun by @ 4K rpms, shifting @4500. There is a huge dip in the power band from 5K-6K rpms, which is a long time to wait when you are trying to pass someone. The PB drop is not noticable drag racing when you are landing shifts @ 6K rpms, but you sit and wait and wait on the freeway trying to hit lift from cruise. Unless you like to dump your clutch at 6400+ rpms.
The XRS is a great daily driver, and it is a great stoplight racecar, but bad when you try to combine the two. Know what I'm trying to say? Don't expect to be driving down the road and instantly have power at your fingertips, you have to work to access the power.
I'd say get the XRS over the Corolla S, the S is just a stock corolla with a body kit. Do NOT buy the Corolla S with dreams of modifying it into a supercar. You'd spend thousands of dollars for not much in return. Even a TRD supercharged S can't keep up with a stock XRS. Just pay the extra $2k and get the XRS, get a cold air intake and exaust, maybe a lightened flywheel, and you will have a badass daily driver that can pwn most cars you'll meet up on the streets.
If you want a racecar you are looking in the wrong place. As fun as the XRS is it is still a one front wheel drive econo box....with an elise motor
