Insufficient EGR Flow

Been having some troubles with my wife's 96 Corolla with the 1.6 and auto trans. It started sputtering a bit, and then threw a check engine light and got worse. Turned out to be a misfire. Pulled the plugs which has white speckled spots on them, replaced them with some Densos, and it cleared the code and all seemed well. Now, at idle, every once and a while it will "miss", for a second, but only at idles. Runs and drives great. The other day the check engine light came on again, and it read insufficient EGR flow. So I'm going to try cleaning out the EGR valve and ports.

My question is, do you guys have any pointers on doing this job? Whats the best way to clean out the valve itself? Soak it? In what? Blast it with compressed air?

Thanks.

I cleaned out the EGR today. It really wasnt even dirty. The check engine light came back on though. I guess I'll have to buy a vaccum pressure guage and test things out.

Thanks!

have you tried cleaning the passage in the intake that the exhaust gas flows back into if that is plugged and not allowing enough egr flow through there is a vsv sensor basically a back pressure gauge that the ecm reads to determine egr flow it could also be bad to check the egr vavle itself you do need a vacuum pump to pull a vacuum and see if it holds, although insufficient egr flow does not normally cause a noticeable change in the way the engine is running it is basically an emissions item if egr flow was too much such as stuck open valve etc this would cause an internal vacuum leak and would be noticable make sure all vacuum lines to the egr control solenoid ,egr and,vsv sensor are all connected and there are no noticable cracks in them and also that none of these lines are clogged

Thanks wrench.
I went ahead and cleared the code and cleaned the intake filter.
If it comes back, I will check the ports the two hoses go into.

Btw, is there anything special I should be using to clean it with besides water?
