stock resonator/pre-muffler

are they the same? and people just word them differently? also, would it help if i replace my old stock resonator with a new one? or a free flowing one?

anybody with experience with the resonator/pre-muffler taken off? and just running pipes from the cat-converter all the way to the muffler at the end? sound difference? thanks

They are somewhat the same as both their purpose is to reduce the noice coming out with the exhaust gases. A lot of people get confused with this. Some books say that the muffler comes before the resonator and some says it's the other way around.

Removing all of the sound dampers will drastically increase the noise of your ride. Although not B16 loud. But still annoying for someone behind you.

My car has 4-2-1 headers into 2 in pipes going through a big straight muffler and then to another straight muffler. With the windows down and the rpms are at 3,000 or higher, I can't hear the radio anymore.

I have heard of people removing their resonators, and then complaining about getting an exhaust drone.

That usually happens when you change or remove a part of the exhaust. You alter the path of the soundwaves so probably the best way to minimize this is to raplace the part with an aftermarket that allows the exhaust to follow a similar path compared to stock.

*Raises Hand* I got rid of my resonator, and my car sounds like rattling-can shit. Leave it on, you'll be happier.

which is the resonator, the small one halfway down the pipe or the larger one at the end...

i was thinking they were both mufflers.

The catalic converter is first. It's often short and fat. The resonator is between that and the muffler, which look longer and more like a cherry bomb muffler.

I see the CAT, it has a heat shield with holes

Here is a manual diagram...

http://www.cygnusx1.net/supra/library/TSRM/ex/EX_2.html

so what will happen if i take off the muffler and replace it with a straight pipe, will that sound like crap?

I am just getting into the exaust realm, i've never learned anything about it really...sorry if that is a dumb question. I was just going to unbolt it and see but I dont want to screw up my engine, that is...if it would mess up the backpressure or something.

Seconded. Performance exhaust, even with a decent Magnaflow / Flowmaster muffler, and no resonator makes that lovely wet fart / kicked-sheep sound. Adding the stock resonator back in there really quieted it down except for WOT from 3.5-5.4K....sounds good, though.

yeah the stock/close to stock exaust setup sounds pretty good... i do hear some sound from the center of the car which seems to be the CAT though, and I wish it would just go to the back...

does the CAT let any fumes out? It just seems like its fairly loud under my car... maybe im just not used to being able to just open my door and lean a bit to look/listen under the car and i've never heard under another car.

I'd but a new exaust but i'd rather save the money for a new turbo engine or a whole new supra with a turbo already in....
