Possible? What would I need?

Hi,

I'm in the market for a reliable daily driver that's also decently quick and fun at the same time. One of my friends recommended me the AE92. I don't know much about Corolla's so maybe I should ask the basic questions first. What years was the AE92?

Second, I would like to make this car as "tossable" as possible so as far as suspension goes, how's the aftermarket? Finally, I would eventually like to try to get this car to run 14's in the 1/4 mile if possible. What would I need? Could I do it with full bolt ons with tuning, headwork, and some PnP or would I have to go with forced induction? Also, whether it's FI or NA, how much do you think I'm going to be spending to get it there?

Thank you!

to run 14s and still streetable, i'd go with a turbo set-up. that would be the cheapest way as well, believe it or not. suspension-wise, grab some KONIs! hehehe

btw, make sure you get (88-91) Corolla GT-S.

The AE92 went from 1988 to 1992. In 1988-1989, the sedans and SR5 coupes made 90hp and the GT-S version made 115hp. In 1990-1992, the sedans and SR5 coupes made 102hp and the GT-S made 130hp. The coupes were not available in 1992. Suspension is the AE92's aftermarket strongpoint. There are an array of springs and struts available, as well as decent selection of sway and strut bars (if you're willing to dig across the net). The GT-S model, especially if you're looking for performance, is a neccesity. The GT-S has a much improved suspension and the more powerful engine (4A-GE) that has plenty of aftermarket support. Despite the GT-S's superior engine, you'll still be hard-pressed to run 14's. Forced induction is possible, but an easier alternative is an engine swap. The best place to find information on swaps is if you visit http://www.phoenixtuning.com/ . Hope this helps!

Hmmm...'88-'91 is a little older than I was hoping to get. How are the newer Corolla's, like the models built around the mid '90s? Would they be just as feasible as an AE92?

Thanks.

Corollas are pretty much hopeless after the 1991 GTS until the '05 XRS came out, unless you're up for some major mods. 93-97 Corollas came with either the 1.6 102hp engine from the AE92 or the 1.8 version making about 10 hp more. 1998-02 came with the newer 1ZZ-FE making 120-125 hp, but still didn't offer the same suspension options as the GTS...or the rear disc brakes.

I have a 2006 rolla LE and this car is great! Loaded with safety features and I have no problem accelerating on the highway and passing. Brakes are very good and ride is supple. Stock radio system is excellent. Headlights excellent. This is the best car I have ever driven (even better then my moms 2001 VW passat). SO you might want to look into the 2006 models. They are not too pricey 13-16K unless you want an xrs)

Hope this helps!

I drove a 2005 Corolla S when my GF had one for about a month.. they're great and all.. but my 90 GTS pwnd it when it came to acceleration I would end up with an XRS myself.

You can also get a 2004 or so Corolla S and then add the TRD supercharger package, but i'm partial to the AE-92 GTS
