You can use midgrade or regular, as the computer will adjust the timing to prevent damage to the engine, however, you will see a decrease in power, the engine will run rougher and there will be a sizeable decrease in mileage. In fact, it will actually cost you more money to use midgrade or regular gas, because the decrease in mileage will be much more than any money you save.

Hmmm, never thought it would do all that .
I've tried premium and mid grade a few times in my 06...can't say I noticed anything. Just did it for a experiment. Back to 87 octane

Using higher octane reduces the likelihood of detonation occuring prematurely in your engine. The 2zz-ge is a high compression engine, something like 11/1 ratio. Using 87 can cause engine knock which can do major engine damage. Why would you pay $19K for a Corolla then go cheap on the gas? You should have gotten a Corolla S or CE if you are that worried about saving $0.10 a gallon.

They put stuff like "Use only 91 octane only in your Corolla XRS" for a reason You may not have trouble right away but somewhere down the line you will be much worse off for being a cheapskate on gas.

Trust me dudes.. the lowest I go on my 90 GTS is mid grade.. when I got the car the owner was driving it with regular.. I was like its supposed to be premium dude! good thing he only drove it like that for a few weeks.

Hi-comp motors need mid grade at least so that they don't run the chance of detonation problems.
