I like snowboarding and sight-seeing and I was wondering how everyone felt about using the Corolla as a 'vacation' car for handling trips of longer distances? Example of a typical distance would be roughly 80-220 miles (1-way).
I know an SUV would be a far better choice, but I'm just curious because in the next few years I'd like to purchase both a small and large car and I wouldn't like seeing everyone fight over the SUV when they can just take the small car.
well I did a long distance trip twice. 2,400 miles round trip from Sarastoa, FL to Dallas, TX in my 97 DX with:
Me Driving
1 wife
1 dog
1 infant in a car seat
Nice drive, we took the senic rout when possible along the gulf coast. The car drives nice on the highway, good gas mileage even with the car loaded down and the a/c cranked.
Now, it was just a little cramped but it is what it is. I'm sure the newer models have more room in them.
Just another point, I do 100 miles round trip each day to/from work.

L0l...Some people commute back and forth to work farther then that...I drove my car from Ohio to the west coast, Florida and all parts of Canada and got great highway gas milage. One problem, Its a light car and tends to get blown around by trucks, but lots of other cars do the same, it has enough power to pass/change lanes when you want!...The trunk is nice and large for luggage with the fold down seats being a nice feature, but if you have OEM tires (Firestone/Goodyear) I would suggest upgrading them before traveling long distances.....I would say the max of three people to have a long comfortable trip...have a good time...Radd Guy...

In my 03S running with the AC cranking I lost 3-5 MPG.....Radd Guy,,,

Haha, yea, very true. I tend to forget that because everything here is within a 15-20 mile radius. But because it's heavily congested, going that distance can take an hour and a half to two hours (if delayed).
My only gripe is the seat comfort. On long trips, it can start to bother my back. Maybe I'm just too old If you aren't hauling around a lot of people and don't mind a stiff seat, the Corolla would work fine.
My 98 always stays home on long trips and we break out the minivan for distance travel.
Well i suppose this isnt a problem in the rollz since most have O/D.. but my 98 prism doesnt have it, so its 3 speed auto is pretty pathetic to say the least when its going relativly fast. It sounds quite loud when your going around 80 ( some from me accidently taking out the little metal piece between the muffler and the exhaust). But If i go on a long drive with it driving in the 75 80 range.. black bumper... not to mention increased oil consumption, so really with mine i try to keep away from long trips. This car is great for around the town driving in my opinion though. Not to say the new corollas would do the same. They probably do really well, considering the specs for gas milage. I think something is wrong with mine. But my car pisses me off in long trip situations.. wish i had the O/D or a damn manual.
Yes I think you have some problems with your car too.
I'm planning to take my corolla on a long trip next summer, Finland - England, if everything goes as planned. I gotta try how fast I can go with the turbocorolla in german autobahns

Watch BMW's and porches pass you Corollas a fast car but not that fast. Now the XRS id take on the autobahn..
And corolla is a great car whether the trip is short or long.
Drove my 97 Corolla DX from Nashville, TN to Naples Florida. It was jsut my wife and I so not to bad as far as room was concerned. That was a 13 hour trip one way and we did it non stop, except for gas and food. Also drove it from Nashville to Destin Fl three or four times. That is about 7 hours one way. LIke others said it gets blown around a little bit on the highway by trucks but overall it want that bad. It was much better than the 93 Civic DX ahtchback that we took to Destin twice.
