Alternator replacement

Hi all!

I just joined this forum and tried to find a DIY for replacing the alternator but without any success. Basically it turned out my alternator is dead, already got new one but I think my mechanic is trying to overcharge me for this so I wonna do it on my own.
If u have a link to a DIY or some good instructions please post them here - the car is a 1992 corolla.
Thank you!

Try the autozone site for their repair guides.
My suggestions about alternator replacement on a '92:
Disconnect both battery terminals. There is a connection on the alternator that goes directly to the + terminal of the battery and it will be "hot" if you don't do this.
Look at the bolt that is loosened when you want to pivot the alternator to adjust the belt tension. On old cars the head of this bolt may be rounded. If it is this way, then replace it when you change the alternat. Most hardware stores have metric bolts.
Buy an alternator with a smooth pulley. I think rebuilt alternators are OK but there is no sense getting one with a rough pulley that will chew up your belt.
It is hard to see what your are doing when you remove or replace the long bolt on bottom of the alternator. But it always surpises me how well one can do it "blind". There is a cyclindrical electrical connector near the alternator that has nothing to do with the alternator itself. This connects to the AC clutch. If it is left disconnected when you finish the job, you find that your AC stops working.

Doesn't look that hard, take your serpentine off, two bolts, one wire and a plug in,then just reverse your take off procedure!....Make sure you disconnect your battery cable...good luck...Radd Guy...

Cool! Thanks for the quick replies. I got on the autozone repair guides and they have a pretty good writeup on that.

Only thing that worries me is that the pivot bolt and lock bolt must be tightened to a certain torque and i dont have the torque wrench ... would it work out without the torque or it absolutely needs to be that tight?

It doesnt have to be exatly, but really thats a factory spec so it should be relatively close. although you can pretty much tell if its too loose or too tight

I've never heard of torque specs on alternator bolts. Just get it about as tight as it was when you started.

Autozone rents them(just a deposit) if not I'm sure Parts America rents them too because we just rented one to replace a water pump on a Grand Prix...All they rent though is the 1/2 drive....You should have no problem...If its your first time maybe have someone help hold/position it while you align the bolts...Few things check your belt for wear-cracks because nows the time to replace it..Disconnect the battery cable and what I do is put a towel/cloth or something around/under the working area to catch anything, bolts, nuts washers, tools from falling because sometimes they just disappear ..good luck and let us know how it goes ...Radd Guy...

Dont worry about torque. I have never torqued an alternator bolt. Just make sure they are tight enough to not come loose and you should be jsut fine.

the alternator on a 92 4afe is cake. the altnernator is in the front. I can give you very easy/quick steps:

1. disconnect your battery
2. remove the top bolt from the alternator, slide alternator forwards (pivoting it from the bottom)
3. slide the belt off the pulley
4. unplug the 3 wire plug and use a 10mm to disconnect the 10Gauge power lead
5. remove the lower bolt.
6. pry alternator out (if it's been in there since the dawn of time, it may need some coaxing)
7. Slide new alt in to lower bracket and put the bolt through, tighten
8. Pivolt the alternator forwards, slide belt back on
9. Use a bar to pivot alternator back towards you (to tighten belt) and put the top bolt in, tighten
10. Reconnec the 10Gauge wire and the plug.
11. recconect battery.

Or you can do as I did and do a search on the forums for the brush replacement. I was going to replace the alternator $85 @ Auto Zone, but then I found out here how to just slip in the replacement brush kit from Toyota for $15. In the past I always just replaced the alternator, but theres a lot to learn here.
