1995 Head Removal - NEED HELP!!

Hello. I have a 95 corolla with a bad head gasket. My husband has worked on all sorts of Fords, but never has taken a head off of a Toyota.

Can anyone please tell me what to tell him about what is involved in removing the 95 Corolla head? I really need this car fixed, and we can't spend the hours and hours in labor costs to have a shop do it.

What needs to be removed first, etc? ANY HELP will be greatly appreciated! I love my Corolla, and I need it back!

Thanks SO much!! Suze

Best bet is too get a chilton or haynes manual for the exact proceedure try autoparts store or library. if your desprate someone can hopefully scan a manual or something

some of the complexities,
-need to remove the timming belt from engine.
-need to remove both cams from head to get at head bolts..
-have to replace the headbolts!

advise:
-take head off with intake manifold attached
-don't completely remove exhaust manifold just unbolt from head
-take advantage of the opportunity replace the timming belt
-consider the water pump as well
-consider the valve seals if the car has over 150Km on it

Thanks

Thanks for such a speedy reply! I will print it out for the hubby. I don't think he wants to go out and get another Chilton's manual... so many manuals for so many past cars, ya know? But why not spend the $20, huh?

Maybe I'll go get it for him. I have no doubt that he can do it. He has replaced a couple of head gaskets in the last 15 years. Like I said, never on a Toyota tho.

I DO appreciate your help! I'll post if he has any more specific question. You're a gem. THANKS!!
Suze

i wouldnt imagine its too terribly different from ford engines, just built better, lasts longer, and takes metric wrenches. :-p

anyway, my own personal opinion is that chiltons manuals are garbage. haynes are better, the actual toyota factory manuals are best. but if hes a chiltons guy, i respect that. and since hes already a mechanic and just needs the finer points, the chiltons may work fine for him. honestly, if hes a chiltons guy, get him the chiltons or hell be upset. its a guy thing. just my 2 cents.

good luck with the repair
