my ae86 isn't in running conditon yet.. but she's been sold short, dissed, and been called names that I really don't appreciate...
but I don't blame ignorant ppl for judging my ae86 and other ae86's so quickly as another 80's shitbox...
it doesn't look all that special TO THEIR EYES... but honestly do many of u bother to "preach" to them about he abilities of the ae86 and why u chose it???? :-?
I would like to defend the ae86 against their slurs... but is such a task fruitless???
bah the only solution i see for this is... well take em for a spin in it on the track... and make sure they piss thier pants...
I hate people in general who diss or otherwise mock the other persons choice. Maybe the guy bought the car for other reasons than finance, etc. Even if the car is underpowered, it can still be an asskicker, its all up to the person behind the wheel. Maybe the person who bought the car wanted that car for its unique features.
Even my own significant other does not appreciate the 86 I have now. They think is Initial D, or whatever people are trying to duplicate that made them drive this car now. But if you look at a 15 year old car, it is SUPER reliable, and very reasonably priced to work on! This can have lots of potential, and it drives great with proper tuning. I don't know why some people still call it a shit box, when new cars on the road are as chessy as a match box?

Actualy I started off as a AE86 hater. I thought the car was ugly and slow and nothing else. I was wondering what the big ****en deal with the car was. I had never even seen/noticed one on the road before. Then I started to do some reserch on the net to see what this ride was all about. I once owned a Corolla before. It was a nice car. Thoe I didn't think the 80's version would be as nice or better. But I was very wrong.
After I did some reserch I found that there was a huge following of this car. So I did even more serching on why. I was amazed that the Ideals that many of owners matched my own on cars. How the did real modifications instead of pimping it. At that time I had discovered Club 4AG. By this time the cars ugly look had grown on me and I started to think this car wasn't that bad plus I was in agreement with the culture surrounding the car. Then one day my uncle got a 85 Celica GT-S. This was the first time I got to experiance a vintage Toyota. I thought the car was great! Now I knew I must have a vintage Toyota. The Corolla GT-S had to become mine.
After I got my first one many people mocked me and made fun of my car as well. One of the worst poeple for this was my dad. But I found a way for them to see what I see in my car. I let them take it for a spin. The only way to understand is to experiance it. My parents don't say nothing about my car anymore nor do my friends.
But I don't really care when people diss my car anymore. One thing I always find funny is that some of them will diss the Corolla the praise the old Accord. This is rather ironic seeing how the 2 cars look alike. Any way it don't matter. It's just part of being the owner of this car. But thats ok cuz chances are they don't know **** about cars any way.
It does not matter if others like you car or not. What matters is if you like your car or not. After all you are the owner and driver and not them. If they don't like it just tell the to **** off and walk.
so what, i just said it was a old corolla made in the 80's in front of my whole art class, because i made a clay model of it.....i didn't bother explaning blah blah blah blah
i'll explain to those who want to listen, some friends of mine are very surprised about the characteristics of this little old toyota
My dad thought nothing of the car when I first got it considering it was not running. Then one day, while working on it, a fellow members brother who lives in the area came by to check it out. Then his dad came over. And the the neighbor down the street came over to say that he used to race them in macau. No my dad respects it a little more ...
But remember, sometimes it's hard to convince non-car buffs to respect older cars. Their knowledge of cars is limited to gas, brake and ocassionally steer. Some of them don't even know how to pump their own gas. My girl friend has made an effort to learn more about cars and so I try and take more time to learn about her interests ...
When I first met some of the AE guys and their cars here, I was like "What a rusty POS!!". This was before I knew that the car was RWD and had a history to it. I also wasn't aware of the Initial-D craze (still haven't seen an episode in it's entirety)
I still don't fully understand why you guys spend soo much time and money on such an old car?! The only way I can relate is to look at it from the perspective that "it's your car" and you're proud of it. Just like how ppl question my loyalty to Camrys.
Overtime, as I've talked to more AE owners, I don't even care what car they drive. However, just an observation, I generally find that ya'll are more knowledgable (with few expections) about the working of cars overall...not just your own car

Same deal... my dad was wondering wtf I was doing buying such an old car... after a while he learned the history about it... and saw my what my true interest in the car was (going out in sub-freezing temperature to work on the car)...
but the funniest story had to be my gf... she doesn't know much about cars other than civics... but her interest in my AE is starting to grow... and I am too taking more time to learn about her interests...
The key to any mans heart is through is hobbies (in this case... my garage)

That is more then likley due to the fact that our AE's are constantly needing mechanicle attention, therefore the guy who's mechanicly inclined is more likely to own the AE, so he can have fun fixing it. Rather than spending ton's of money having someone else fix it all the time.
