I drive a 1994 Corolla "Special" 5-spd and have been reading around quite a bit but can't seem to find accurate information for my car.
1) What engine do I have? I'm assuming the 4A-FE 1.6L with 105bhp
2) What transmission do I have?
I'm trying to find out the gear ratios so I can calculate approx. how fast my engine's turning overat various speeds since I don't have a tach.
When I'm going 150-160km/h it sounds like it's screaming and I'd like to know if I"m near-redlining or not -- I don't wanna kill the thing.
p.s. if anyone's installed the instrument cluster for the 1.8L SE or whatever into their "Special" could you let me know? A guy at the wreckers nearby said as long as I have a fuse for it, and a lead coming off the engine I could just replace it and finally have a tach.
At 160 km/h your doing 4300 rpm, its not a M3 slow down! you are gonna kill it!
try 110 @ 3000 i wouldn't go beyond 130 @ 3600 for any length of time
4A-FE uses a C50 while 7A-FE uses a C52
your ratios are
1st 3.545 7afe 1st 3.166 ****otherwise the same
2nd 1.904
3rd 1.310
4th 0.969
5th 0.815
Diff 3.722
As for the engine check the emissions sticker under the hood or look on the front right of the engine block, (right up against the tranny) about halfway down theres a flatspot that will give ya the real block code (7a / 4a)
Yes the tach cluster is plug and play all the wiring is there, 2 things to consider
- some people mistrust the fuel guage as for some people it seems to be worng !?!?
- mileage will be different then your current odometer

LOL! the 4AGE runs about 4000RPM at 120km/h I think I hit about 5000+RPM at 160km/h, there's nothing wrong with 4300RPM at 160km/h. My regular speeds on the Highway are about 120-140km/h.
As for what engine you got, look under the hood.. there's a sticker in the inside of the hood that says what size your motor is. 1.6L = 4AFE and 1.8L = 7AFE.
Nope, mine's white and I haven't done anything to the headlights besides replacing the bulbs.
94_Rolla_Guy - thanks for those formulas. I put all those calculations in a sweet Excel table so I can determine rpm for any speed in any gear.
The problem is that using those formulas it seems like I won't hit my redline until ~228km/h which is somewhat unbelievable for a Corolla (also since the speedo only goes to 220km/h which is usually not attainable by economy cars).
Also, although as it seems like the engine's screaming at 160km/h it's only apparently going at 4400rpm -- not sure i agree with that as it sounds like it's above 5k.
With these calculations added in, seems like I'm going just above 4,550 at 160kmh... a little more believable but still seems low for some reason, though it'd be great if it's accurate!

No that sounds about right, in my 4afe ae101 trueno I couldn't get into top on the track, 4th gear got me just past 180 (indicated speed) at about 6500rpm, so 4,550rmp for 160 in 5th sounds good.
dayam.... sorry man no disrespect, I just picture the Corolla as the uber-economy car (a step up from the Echo mind you!) so I can't picture it getting to 180km/h and STILL having an extra 1000rpm+ to go!
If that's the case then I'm all good - I've never gone above 165km/h in this car anyway - it's bone stock.
thats wierd because my speed limiter kicks in at 173km/h. as for the math provided it seems to be accurate for me, but that does sound funny about not redlining till 228km/h i doubt a rolla would go that fast

Well i've done one top speed run, with speedo disconnected, was clocked at 194kmh, car might have a bit more but i would need a really really long straight.
