Replace water pump every 60,000 miles?

This mechanic talked me into spending $450 on replacing the water pump and belt on my 01 corolla, he says it needs to be replaced every 60000 miles, mine is around 90000 miles and still had the original pump, anyway, should I find another mechanic for my future auto repairing needs? help newbie here

If it's not leaking or making any weird noises.

Leave it alone.

$450 is alot for this simple job. I wouldn't pay more than $200 labor.

I take it your talking about your serpentine belt? I always thought that something like water pumps, alternators, radiators, steering pump Etc... you didn't have to replace it till it went bad Its not like a timing belt that should be replaced in a certain time frame...If you didn't have any problems like squealing or leaking you might have driven it another 90K ...They only start leaking/squealing at the bushings anyway and when that happens its time to replace because it might freeze up......water pump--$30-70 serpentine belt---$25, anti freeze---$10....You paid $450...Over $350 in labor to install a simple water pump that should taken them(with all kinds of great tools) no longer then an hour I would say you got ripped in more ways then one....We just put a water pump on my buds 95 Pontiac last month...took and hour and cost under $40, I had a water pump and timing belt put in my 86 rolla a few years ago for $250.....Radd Guy...

The water pump on a Corolla IS run by the Timing Belt. Replace the Timing Belt every 100K and only replace the Water Pump if it is leaking...

98 + Corollas don't have a timing belt.

Serp belt runs the waterpump.

damn he charged me $255 for labor and $170 for the parts which includes a water pump and a serpertine belt, when I looked at the bill I knew something was wrong. I live in an apartment and the lease forbids any auto work (some people do it anyway but not me)

I started to trust this guy when he replaced a driveaxle for 1/2 the cost another garage charges, when he starts to know me he realizes I know little about cars and now this, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Correct.... Before timing chains when they just had timing belts it was a good idea to change the timing belt when changing the water pump because it was located behind it and usually was well worn by the time the pump went out anyway........Radd Guy

I'd change the waterpump everytime I change the timingbelt, its a shitload easier and cheaper to do when you do them both at the same time.

^flash is correct

anyways, i got quoted about $500 to replace the waterpump and timing belt on my 94 corolla, and like $450 from another shop, so i decided to just change them on my own, it shouldn't be that hard

Getting the crank wheel off is a pain in the ass. You'll need to make a "custom tool" to hold it in place to get the bolt off.

You mean put the socket on it and crank the starter (note: pull the leads out first)
Works for me.

Guys with 1zz corollas.

Changing your waterpump is 10x easier than guys with 4a/7a motors.
Just take the alternator off and you'll have access to the waterpump.
7-8 10mm bolts and it's out.
Don't have to deal with mounts, crank pulley, timing belt, ect...
