getting a 94 corolla, wondering how possible a 20vavle swap is
so my girlfriend is getting a brand new car and she is giving me her old corolla. it's a 94 i think dx. i was just going to use it as a cheap get-around car but that is boring, so i'm looking at doing a possible swap, a four door corolla that kills civics would be a fun sleeper. i'm a subaru guy and have done subaru builds and swaps so i know about the process but dont really know anything about corollas themselves. i know how much newbie questions suck for you guys, but please humor me. i'm sure that there wiring issuses, but is anything required to make it fit mechanically? also i'm sure that there are different variations of the fwd 20vavle engines, is there one better suited than the others. i really appreciate any help that you guys can give me
There are two versions of 20V 4AGEs, Silvertop 20V which has 160hp and Blacktop 20Vs which have 165 and 170hp depending on year.
The motors will fit right in, but you will basically need EVERYTHING that comes with the 20V motors, including the transmission, ECU, wiring harness, AFM, manifolds, etc. If the motor is not complete then you'll be looking around for parts for this motor forever as they were never available in north america.
You may also need to upgrade your fuel pump and most likely brake system as those little drums on the back most likely won't be enough.
A very possible swap but not cheap in the long run.
Ren, we're getting on fine with the stock braking system with GZE under the hood of the 94. Remember, the front discs are unusually large for the car.
Josh, definitely do the fuel pump. It's at most another $50 from a wreckers anyway. After spending who knows how much money on the engine, it's cheap insurance if you ask me.
hey guys thanks for the info. is the 20v's wiring a drop in swap or does it require an ugly amount of splicing with the car's main harness like subarus do (i'm sure that it probably does due to the fact its going from a RHD to LHD). also i've been doing some research and i was finding engines and tranny packages in the $500-700 range, i wasnt really finding anything with ecu/wiring so i'm guessing that the ecus are hard to find. whats a good importer of toyota stuff? if i couldnt find one for a reasonable cost i was thinking about going with like a megasquirt standalone, but i've also read that the 20v is an overated engine. is there another engine that might be easier to come across and still have decent power? i dont really want to dump a huge amount of cash into this as my EJ20 powered impreza is my main car. thanks again
i've been looking around, i've found some info. there is actually less info on this subject than i would have expected. just a few more questions though. the big one being who the best importer of thease engines are, cause im not coming up with anything really great. i'm thinking that just a straight up 16v 4age would be what i'm looking for. from what i understand mr2 engines are also a comon swap, do they just drop in with the mr2 trannys? thanks guys

No the gear selectors are on the wrong side on the MR2, it can be modified to work but i'm not sure how, you could just use your current box. (unless its auto)
go for a 4agze super charged motor..simular price and goes hard..rear drums are fine for street use not track! i have the 20v and its a butiful thing..as i have the awd wagon its a bit heavy so i used the braking system from my front cut (tereno gt)...but hav'nt worked out how to change the rear drums to discs at a good price yet as it has a live diff..it stops hard...!!!no prob..i would have gone this way but the supercharger is were my centre diff is..its still east west motor..best of luck..the loom will need spicing..anybox is fine.im using my stock five speed with the 4age flywheel cluch set up straight bolt on and its takes 8000 rpm launches with out a prob except for all 4 wheels lighting up lol
