Already took the 06 Corolla in to the shop

Started hearing a funky noise that would kick on for about 30 seconds and then shut off - and it did it 3 separate times on my 40 mile commute to work. Then it did it again on the way back from work - 3 separate times. First time it's done this in the 7000 miles that I've owned the car.

Well wouldn't you know, they didn't hear it when they test drove it, and ran it through the diagnostics and found nothing. The service guy said it's just a normal thing, that the fuel pump runs a diagnostic check on itself, and his 05 Corolla does the same thing.

First time after 7000 miles it just started doing this?!?! Anyone else experience this? It's a rather loud tinny sound that comes from under the drivers side of the hood.

Does it continue to make the noise if you stop suddenly?
Will it make the noise sitting still idling?

Who cares about some sounds if the car is working fine. They are mechanical things and they arent silent. I bet you'd go crazy in my car

that dealer is BSing for sure. The fuel pump evap diagnostic runs only when the car hasnt been runnig for about 5 hours- that is, when the engine is OFF, not while you're commuting.

Thanks

I know they were BS'ing - nothing much I can do about it though. They supposedly did the diagnostic checks (I'm picking the car up tomorrow and will read the paperwork on what was done), so I guess I can't do much more.

It could be the smog pump that routes air from your intake to your catalyic converter on a cold start to clean up the emissions a little bit. I know my XRS has one, dunno about the S.

357wheelgunner

357wheelgunner - THANK YOU! That sounds like the most logical thing that it could be - it pretty much did it when just starting up, and it had a metallic sound like it was exhaust-related.

Makes sense - now why couldn't those knuckleheads have just told me that and saved me a trip to and from the dealership, as well as leaving my poor Corolla to freeze outside this weekend in 4 degree F weather

Thanks again.
