Crank pulley came off!!!!

In the last 5 miles of a 200 mile round trip the wifes 89 AllTrac wagon managed to separate the pulley from the balancer and spit the belts off. She called me from town and filled me in on the situation so after a cooldown period I had her drive it straight home and when she arrived it was on the verge of a major overheat but shows no apparent damage other than the pulley. Is it common for this to happen at a certain age? Anyone know what the part costs? I guess I have to fix it quickly

Are you sure the pulley is not just lose? You usually have to losen them up to take the belt out, so it could be maybe the bolt was lose, the pulley moved and the belt came out.

BTW, we use Km's in Canada.

Nope...the actual pulley is held on to the balancer by being forced over a rubber belt for lack of a better description and the pulley has walked off of said rubber belt. I'm not confused by the construction as my Jeeps are equipped the same way but I have never seen one let go before. The actual core of the balancer is still bolted firmly to the crankshaft but I have almost got the pulley section off by hand it has moved so far forward.

I know what I have to do to replace it and was essentially asking if it was a common ocurrence and maybe a ballpark $$$ for the parts.
as for the m/km thing...I'm old and set in my ways

I would think this kinda thing is inevitable given age and mileage, if you wanna fix it cheap grap one from a local wrecker. Otherwise shop around the local parts stores

BTW make sure a siezed accessory didn't cause this IE A/C, alternator, waterpump, etc.
