AE92 90 sr5 motor/HG questions

ok im prety sure my HG went on my corolla (#1 and #2 cyclinders have like 30-40 spi compression, others are fine). didnt drive it more than 2 mins after it happened, so it didnt heat up. coolant was down a little bit

ok my questions are:

1) is the motor a 4afe? ( its twin cam 16v)
2) ive been looknig around and found that it seems liek i have to take the cams out to get at teh head bolts, is there an easy way to so this?

how hard is it going to be to replace the HG on this car. teh body is great and the motor only has 180,xxx so it not too too many

any help/experisnces will be appreciated

thanks

the 4AFE is DOHC the 4AGE is TWIN CAM totally different setup. The twin cam setup is wider than DOHC setups.

Yes rollawreck, your motor is a 4AFE as its an SR5, I would price out what it will cost you to replace the HG and price out what a newer motor will cost, I bet you is very close.

What the hell are you talking about??

DOHC = Double Over Head Cams

Its the same thing, no difference. They're both DOCH and both twin cam

oy! someone help me out here.. the difference is the way the cams are actuated I believe. Look at a 4AGE and then look at the 4AFE, sure they both got 2 CAMS but they're not driven by the motor the same way.

TWIN CAM is belt driven while DOHC is driven differently, I just can't remember off hand.

No its just 2 different terms for the same thing, The way the cams are driven is irrelevent.

The cams are driven using belts in both motors. (Although in alot of F series one cam is gear driven off the other.

twin cam is where there is 1 cam with the timing belt and not 2 like DOHC. the intake cam is driven off the exhaust cam with a gear under the valve cover. from everything i read, the motor in my 90 sr5 is a 4afe..

im doing all the work myself and i dont have a garage, so swapping the whole motor isnt an opton really. i got the head all disconnected and labled, i just have to take the cams out and head bolts now to get the head off now and replace the HG. so far so good, considering im used to working on hondas..

any help or suggestions along the way?

im pissed, got a brande new MVI 3 days before this...

Have a read.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOHC

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_cam

The are two terms for the same thing.
The way the cams are driven is not relevent.

Also on topic, I've never looked under the cam cover of a 4afe but it is common on toyota motors to have to remove one camshaft to get at the head bolts.

Also bear in mind they normally have strange type of drive on the head bolts (can't recall the name of it at the moment) but its star shaped. A hex key can be used, but I wouldn't trust it to get the correct tourque settings when re-fitting the head.
