4AFE transplant

Hi, I have a 1994 AE101 manual trans Corolla with a tired 4AFE engine which I intend to replace with another engine of the same kind. First though I need to know a few things:

When I choose a replacement engine, do I need to get one of the same year as the vehicle or can I get a later model 4AFE and expect it to fit?

Will a 4AFE fit both an auto and manual trans or are the bell housings different for each?

Are ECUs built specifically for a manual or auto trans? In other words can I connect an ECU that came from an auto to an engine that's going onto a manual trans?

Any answers much appreciated

The later ones will bolt up no problem but I believe that the ignition system is different. So I would track down one from you year to save headaches.

The bell housings are different but the motors aren't. Meaning you can use an auto motor but just bolt it up to your manual gearbox.

Yes the ECU's are different but an auto one will run a manual if you want.
Why would you not be reuseing your ECU??

If its just a straight motor replacement you should reuse all the wiring/electrics from you old one. No point in buy parts you don't need.

Yah, just get another 4afe. No need for trannies, ECU's or anything!

I think the 93-97 range is what you want. Earlier has a diff. intake, ignition system. I've swapped manuel to auto, no prob. ECU is diff for diff tranny but I figure a auto ECU would run a stick engine, just not vice versa because the tranny would get no signal for O/D. Search some of the swapper threads for more info. Some of these guys really know the ECUs some are like me and just guessing. I don't see any probs tho in those year ranges Not sure when the OBD changed from I to II tho.

Anyway, as said above your best bets to track down a 4AFE from the same year
(shouldn't be hard there's heaps of them here) and just to re-use all of your current bits.

I got to talk to a Toyota mech today who said a '96 4AFE should be an identical replacement for a '94 4AFE, which is what most of your replies have said. Thanks for your suggestions

Go for a 7afe (whole motor ready to start) for more power just make sure you get the ecu..should plug straight in..
might need to play with the wires but only a little bit if at all..the ecu from auto to man is prob different but only a fraction in calibration..eg might have less hp but more torqe..as this happens with most models but not by a lot......i'd say not in that set up.its more for performace cars eg silver top 20v ..ecus are dif as the auto would'nt take off very well with a manual program
