if it's BROWN then it is the coolant temp sensor that leads to the ECU. The white one wire goes to your radiator switch, and the green goes to your cold start injectors (which is on the intake manifold) and your starter.....

In the instance of an older 4afe..... i'm sure it's the lack of the map sensor.... although, mine did run on the 4age with ITB's with incorrect map readins and didn't throw a code. The coolant sensor not being connected would definately throw a code. Why don't you jumper the diagnostic plug (on the strut wall under the hood... and underside of the hood tells you what to jumper) and get the code?
