long time pickup, 1st time corolla owner

G'day !

I have been in the pickup forum for a while. We are looking at a 92 corolla all trac wagon tonight. That all trac must hurt mileage a bit eh?

215000mi, timing chain done twice, last at 180,000. I know of all the problems that are specific to any 22re, what can I expect for problems to be aware of with this model year ... 4afe engine I think they said.

Thanks !
Pete

I can't be of too much help, but my family briefly had an all-trac wagon a few years ago... and this is what I can tell you:

Yes, the all-trac can hurt the legendary 4AFE mileage, see: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/9136.shtml

The rust will be catching-up with the car by now, so inspect it VERY closely. Make sure that all of the standard drivetrain components are good, esp the center diff.

The engine and transmission should be no problem, they go forever...and it shouldn't be blowing smoke, either. Of course these all depend on how the car has been treated/driven (as always!).

All in all, they're excellent cars. The AWD drivetrain seems to be one of the most reliable ever produced (though Subaru has come lightyears), much better than the 4WD we had on our 1987 Tercel wagon.

Good luck!

P.S.: LONG LIVE BUBBLES!

Heh heh, TPB is a Canadian institution! No prob with the advice, sorry I couldn't give more.

Oh, one thing: if you test drive the car and you think you can actually hear the diff, it's bad. I know on many 4X4 trucks it's normal, but when you can hear it on a Corolla All-Trac, it's probably a bad thing (as it was for us).

Canada bought it

Eh,

Well we bought it so you guys will be seeing me around here as much as I am on the pickup forum now. But hopefully not too much !

I've done the head gasket and timing chain job on the 22re a couple of times now so the guys over there coached me a lot to a couple of successfull conclusions.

Gotta go edit my sig and see you all later !
Pete
